simple question: do you prefer games where you wade through armies of enemies, slaughtering all in your path and the challenge is in their superior number and ability to gang beat you if you screw up, or games where all your enemies are just as strong, if not stronger, than you and the challenge comes from the skill required to fight just one of them in a duel? remember i'm asking for your enjoyment, not comments on which you think is harder or easier. also give an example of the best one of these experiences.

Carnage, definately.

Primal destructive release always tops repeated failure.

I suck at fighting games too.

duels for sure, i think its more satisfying knowing i outwitted and crapped on some guy supposedly "equal" to my ability rather than a bunch of grunts running at me and having me slay them in 3 hits with zero defense or strafing

Personaly, I love carnage, the hight of human nature comes out in frantic situations like that when you can't slow down to think what you're going to do next.

Depends on the game, really. I can go for either. Massive battles (like many action games and beatemups) can give a sense of accomplishment from surviving flat-out assault by the skin of your teeth, but duels (like many fighting games) give more of an opportunity to use every trick at your disposal and the chance for stylish finishers.

Might be why I like the Dynasty/Samurai Warriors series. I don't have to choose!

I think AC2 had a nice mix of this. Also, Gears Of War Horde mode and the Left 4 Dead series give you mass combat but since the enemies come from a variety of powers and skills, you can have duel moments along with mass combat.
In Assasin's Creed 2, you can fight a medium sized mass in combat, not 40k scale, but more then an FPS where you gun down three guys guarding one room, but personalize it with counters, weapon theft, dodging, and action cinematics. The assassinations lend themselves to mini duels with your target(Although AC1 was much more prone to this, even if mass combat did suck dick in AC1) if you don't feel like taking the super easy way of actually being a stealthy assassin.

Honestly, I'd prefer duels as it usually involves more cinematic moments, grace, and adrenaline, it's easier to get immersed. Whereas too much carnage would be like Too Human, sure your moves are cool, but it's the same mindless masses of dumbasses to kill until you hit the boss fight and your moves always have the expected result.

Carnage. Nothing more elegant than mercilessly slashing through wave after wave of enemy with nothing more then a minimal amount of weapons and an "I can kill anything" attitude.

yeah games that involve both of them are usually great games! one minute you can be charging through armies and the next jumping off walls fighting a ninja or something.

Depends. I like to play carnage against groups of grunts, but I like to duel against the superior guys.

Dynasty Warriors Gundam....................... I only ever played the demo but the level of carnage made me bust a nut.

Carnage is more fun, duels require most skill so I like both equally.

Off topic: I might make a thread for my 1,000th post but I don't know what yet.

Carnage. I love creating a swath of destruction through an army of enemies. May they be splattered with the blood and gore of their comrades!

I think a good balance of both is best. I like games where you have weaklings to slaughter to make you feel powerful, but at the same time you'll have more dangerous fights in which you need wits to survive too.

I do love one on one duel type games, but until I see a decent one on one sniper duel game, I will always hold pure carnage in just as high regard. (A good sniping game would be about my idea of heaven.)

Carnage. Any game where it's basically you vs. an army of grunts is going to appeal to me. That's why I still love the old beat-em-up genre.

Duels, because I can depend on my reaction time to shoot/hack any enemy to death one on one, but in a large scale battle you can get outgunned easily.
