For the Final fantasy fanbase (whichever sect you belong to), have you ever successfully employed this spell? Or is it practically a running joke in your opinion?

Bah, all the status ailments in the Final Fantasy games are pretty useless. They don't work on bosses, you know, the only actual threat to the player in the game.

Not in 13, at least.

Status effects rule. No MP costs, the spells keep the chain gauge from falling (Always pair your SAB with a RAV! COM + SAB is pointless!), and bosses are always vulnerable to a few of them.

Hell, I use them more than buffs!

OT: 13 doesn't have sleep, and it's mostly useless in all the others.

Very much so, as with all enfeebling and debuffing spells they can be incredibly helpful when used right.
It is handy for putting out powerful enemies from random encounters while dealing with little ones that came along.
Bosses with minions it is good for putting minions out of commission quickly without having to spend time focusing attacks on them. Or stopping healer minions.

In Final Fantasy XI sleep is one of the most valuable spells in the game.

In Final Fantasy IX you can put the Antlion to sleep.
I know Square has carefully inserted two, maybe three bosses in the whole series who can be thrashed by simple status problems. Looking at you, Ruby Weapon.
