I recently read in a magazine that Capcom announced that they were changing some things up for the new Resident Evil. Obviously the new settings, graphics, and control scheme, but I also read that they are getting rid of the Merchant from Resident Evil 4 and they're also going to be "rating" you on how well you did a level. I don't know about you guys, but I'm going to miss the Merchant. I'm ok with the Africa setting, I'm ok with the new controls, but when they take away the best part of Resident Evil 4, that's crossing the line.

It's obviously going to be a great game, but what do you think of all this... change? I for one am not a fan.

The merchant was funny because he's always around in a place crawling with deadly parasite infected villagers like nothing is happening. Also ratings at the end of levels have never been fun for me. If you barely make it through the level and the game gives you a bad rating it's the games way of saying "You suck".

I am actually rather gutted that he's been removed... I always thought if I make my character stand by him enough he'd hug me.

Honestly the serious hasn't been survival horror since the new control scheme. I can think of nothing more horrifying than trying to survive a group of zombies, and find myself running right into them because after years of playing resident evil, I didn't have the controls nailed down.

Money & upgrades were probably the weakest aspect of RE4 so I'm glad they got rid of it. By requiring the player to collect cash from dead Ganados, the game effectively became a kill-driven shooter and lost any notion of "survival" and "horror".

Ratings are nothing new for the series. I liked them before and I'll probably enjoy them again.

No first aid sprays, no first aid sprays, no first aid sprays...
They still have the weapons and such. Just not the merchant. The weapon buying screen shows up at the end of every level.

Oh and yes, there are still first aid sprays. :D

While the merchant was awesome he was nowhere near the best part if anything the mercenaries mini-game was.

Meh, this is intensely reminiscent of the RE5 demo impressions thread. No matter, I'll say the same thing here as I did there:

Resident Evil should not be a co-op game. It's a kick in the face for anyone that used to like playing Resident Evil solo to have to spend the whole of the game tied down by the restrictions of an AI partner. For me, Resident Evil has always been a solo experience, and that's the way it should be.

When you're playing with someone else the fear factor just disappears; despite being one of the least scary games games in the series RE4 still had a decent amount of scares to pin on you. I find it hard to imagine being scared as much when I'm playing with one of my friends, not that I'd want to anyway since Resident Evil (and survival horror in general,) should be played solo.

I hate the level rankings. They just seem to be there for the sake of pissing you off. As for the merchant, he will be missed.

"That's a nice gun, stranger!"
Classic.

They made changes?

Kidding. I guess. I am a little bummed about the lack of the Cockney merchant and am hesitant about the addition of an AI partner. Although I do believe every Resident Evil game would give you a little stage grade at end of each level. I'm certain Resident Evil 4 at least had a little accuracy and time screen at the end of each one. So really just nixing the merchant and adding the partner are the only additions I have heard of so far and I don't really like either decision...

Make the writing good, and I'll take anything. I'm just itching for survival horror game with good writing, and they just don't turn up often enough. Not to say they don't exist, but it seems like people have just forgotten how to scare people.

Whadd'ya buyin?
It is sad to see the merchant go, but he will no doubt have some sort of equivalent here, unless they want to shake up the weapon system completely. I for one loved the Merchant, except when it came to ammo. It an underground carvern filled to the brim with rounds, he wouldn't sell me a measly bullet. Why?
