Poll: Changes to Extra Time

I've been watching footy for close to twenty years now, and as much as I love the game, there seems to be something lacking in Cup Finals. Sure, you occasionally get a great match, but quite often, it seems that teams are happy to play a negative game and just take it to penalties.

I'm not a huge fan of penalties, and I would much rather see a team win it on the field as opposed to the coin-flip that is the penalty shoot-out. Here's my solution.

Follow the example that the NHL has imposed and remove one player per side for the extra time. By doing this, you would increase space on the pitch, and see a more exciting finish to a match. What do you think?

I really like that idea (although I doubt any changes will ever be made). I would also prefer 'golden goal' being brought back. Either that or introduce 'extra time multi-ball'.

I agree that extra time can be some of the most boring football ever to be seen on Earth, and yes, something should be done about it, you're right.

I'd like to see the "Golden Goal" rule re-enforced, maybe backed up by the "Lose a player" rule.

Maybe a touch limit would work? Like, each player can only touch the ball so many times before kicking it on, for faster play?

With respect to football, removing one player from each team would change very little. They'd still pass it around waiting for penalties.

Going straight from injury time to Golden Goal, that would liven it up.

What I really want is Golden goal with an extra ball added to play every 15 minutes. There is no limit on how long this can go n for or how many balls can be in play, nor are there any brakes. The players keep going until someone scores, if a ball goes off pitch a linesman (sorry, assistant referee) simply boots it back on in a random direction.

I personally love penalty shoot-outs. There can be more drama in 10 kicks of the ball than the previous 120 min combined.
I don't think I would have liked to have missed out on last month's Celtic v Dundee Utd. penalties. Went round the whole team with Boruc having the best kick of the lot.
Most fans I speak to love the feeling of tension when your team (or indeed any) is in this situation (although one cannot help but feel sorry for whichever player misses or sees his spot kick saved)

I assume that you are talking about the Man United vs Tottenham game today. Yes I would like to see the return of golden goal as the tension of making a mistake, I feel, would cause the players to play with more of an attacking mentality in regular time

To an extent, yes, since it was on but I refused to watch it since I hate both teams...Spurs a little more than United. I was speaking more in generalities than specifics. For me, I hate seeing things decided on a coin flip, and although the tension of a shoot out is palpable, it doesn't feel like the best way to end things.

Personally I like what the old NASL did way back when. Start from 35 yards out, 5 seconds to score. 1 on 1, the keeper can do anything, so can the player. That was much more tension filled than the penalty kick shootout, which is taken from the same place whether it's professionals or 8 year olds. If you absolutely must keep the PK around, have the pros take them from the 18, something that would be somewhat difficult. They are getting paid to do this, so from 12 yards it's a no-contest.
