I try not to. I can spend hours in the character editors.

Although often a face that looked fine on the character creation screen ends up looking terrible in game. I've been known to restart games a dozen times trying to get it right.

By way of example, here are my Shepards:

Jesus, I know that feel. I'm pretty much exactly like that. I have that problem, especially, with White Knight Chronicles. I make my character and he looks amazing in the character creator, but once he's in the real game he contracts a serious case of baby face.

My characters never really look silly. I prefer my characters to be believable because I always take my character seriously. If the character doesn't look exactly like I want it to, I will instantly restart the game. And I will do it as many times as it takes to get it perfect.

Although there is the rare occasion I prefer the defaults over anything I could make in the character creator. I will always prefer the default ManShep and I will always prefer the default ManHawke.

Well, depends.
For example I once made a character in New Vegas who was something of a savant. He had some physical deformities (Over pronounced brow and lower jaw, think Sling Blade) that I used to distinguish him and give him some character.

But as far as doing it "for the lawlz", no I don't make silly looking characters for no reason.

I tend to spend half an hour playing around with the character creator, only to end up using the default settings with maybe a different hair or eye colour when I actually play the game.

Nawp. Never. I take character customisation super cereal.

I've deleted fully-levelled characters in the past, purely because I've become unhappy with how they look/ their name.

I usually don't even bother. Nothing ever looks right.

For the most part, I use either the default or one of the presets. (depending on the game)

Sometimes, though really not often. I find the customization takes way too much time and no one is likely to even see it anyway. I usually stick with the default (or something close to it) and maybe change hair color/style.

Meh. When I role play, I role play. When I play a game, I play a game. No need to mix the two unless the game's a natural fit for it. No need to make a character look the way I want when it doesn't matter in the slightest in-game.

I don't really. Hell, City of Heroes offered insane customization, and a good portion of my characters were still plainclothes superheroes.

Unless I can make the silliness work within a concept. Thus, War Chef:

I take it more seriously than I should. It really starts to bug me if they look silly or dis-proportionate. I even had problems with my Dalish character in DA:O because I set the skin tone too light and I thought that being a Dalish and a hunter he should have a tan!

Because I have no artistic ability what so ever I normally cycle through the presets to find one I like then adjust a few things like eyes and hair.

That being said my Saints Row 3 character was silver with blue hair, lips and crazy face tattoos, but physically everything looked alright.

Not really, making a funny character is good and all for around ten minutes or so, but the hilarity soon wears off. And since I play games by myself more or less, I'd prefer to have a character that I can take seriously so it doesn't throw me out of the experience. Though if I'm only going to play a game for an hour or two, say, one of the Saints Row games, making a silly character is fun.

I usually go for pleasant looking characters; I'll sometimes go for a very unconventional look, however, if I feel like it.

i take the character creation seriously very seriously and then the toons end up looking stupid because i suck and i can never see the model properly so i get in game and get a good look and then i see the horror and then restart the game or visit the re-creator as soon as i can and even then it takes a couple of hits to get it right

I like to make my female characters look sort of, not exactly ugly or unattractive, but give them more personality than most female characters in games.

If I can modify the body, I like to make them a bit more normal ('fat' in video-game terms), with smaller breasts. And I like giving them scars and broken/odd noses.

Although sometimes (especially if I'm playing a mage or something not physical) I like to make them very starved-looking, like they forget to eat.

I don't really like making them look 'silly', not on the first playthrough, at least, but I try to sometimes make them look like Neanderthals, or something. Especially with dwarves.

Not really "stupid looking" per say, but whenever I play a game with character customization I play as on old lady named Siegfried von Manstein.

I tend to make characters of the opposite sex with features that are attractive to me. I've never, not even once, gone out of my way to make a silly looking character. I don't think my sense of humour is attuned to that sort of gag.

Sometimes. For example, my Gunzerker in Borderlands 2 has the nuts and bots hat while wearing the pink pandoracorn skin, which really helps lighten up the mood. In more serious games however, I tend to stick with more normal looking features.
