I've been seeing it more and more in the newer fighting games, the ability to customize/create your own characters.

Good thing? Bad thing? Depends on the game? Just don't care?

I think it worked well in SC4, but I'm not really that 'hardcore' of a gamer when it comes to fighting games, so I was wondering what you all thought.

For fighting games? Definitely.
It allows you to make a character that you'll like, give him the moves that best suit you, and overall, lets you play the game how you want.

As already mentioned, it's rarely a bad thing in any game, but in fighting games it's practically compulsory. I much prefer seeing a character of my own creation beating up a scantily clad girl than one of the game's characters.

(Don't read too much into that.)

For fighting games, as you've said, character creation has become the norm. I think that this is a very good thing, as it lets the player get drawn further into a genre of game which is rather non-immersive. SC4 impressed me with the customization because it actually allowed you to get into the nitty gritty of your character, but previous to that SC3 did a horrible job.

Like anything, its only a good thing if its done well.
