Back when this intrepid forum poster was but a wee child, back about the age of 10-13 I took on the habit of requesting all my sandwiches were made with grated cheese as opposed to slices of the full block. In my mind they tasted better. Whether this was the case or not I don?t know, all I remember is that I most assuredly had a preference for grated cheese. Such a thing has diminished somewhat and I?m more than fine with eating sliced cheese should I not be bothered to get out the cheese grater. In the case of what variety of cheese, it was generally Cheddar or Red Leicester.
The purpose of the poll therefore is to inquire as to whether anyone also has a preference for how they take their cheese, be it sliced or grated. Due to the flexibility and versatility of such a foodstuff, I?m afraid rather than adding ?Sliced with crackers? and ?Sliced on sandwiches? and the like I?m going to limit it to the four options you see above.

The second purpose of this thread is basically to share good cheese recipes, preferred type of cheese (Are you an Edam kinda guy?) and the like.
As for me, I like my cheddar grated over a large plate of chips. It?s not terribly healthy, in fact I?m quite sure it?s really bad for me, but I love it nonetheless.

Thoughts, my good Escapist friends?

Cheese.....

Right.

Okay, well, I say it depends on the food- sandwiches are fine with slices of cheese, whilst spaghetti is only good with the grated stuff.

Yep.

Oh, and here's a wonderful Greek recipe involving cheese and filo dough:

Feta Cheese Pastry (Tiropita)

1 pound package frozen filo dough
5 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup flour
1/3 cup milk
Pinch white pepper
7 eggs
1 pound feta cheese, crumbled
Butter, softened

Thaw filo dough completely. Melt the 5 tablespoons butter in a large saucepan. Whisk in the flour. Slowly whisk in the milk. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until sauce thickens. Add white pepper. Remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes. Quickly whisk the eggs into the sauce one at a time. Then stir in the cheese.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a 10" deep-dish cake or quiche pan with butter.

To prepare, flatten filo dough and cut into 10" circles. Brush dough circles with butter. Using 3 filo layers at a time, place one pastry layer in bottom of dish. Follow with layer of cheese mixture, and repeat, ending with pastry layer. Bake for about 45 minutes, or until golden brown.

I'm serious, really a fantastic food.

................Okay, Amnestic, what do I get in payment for this little slice of heaven I have provided you?

Sliced cheese, but that's because when I visit my grandparents we follow dinner with a cheese plate before the more classical desert. I don't personally eat many cheeses other than on a hot, juicy burger, but we do when we're at my grandparents

Grated shall remain the King of cheese in sandwiches. The smooth, soft texture delivering the full cheese flavour, yet not overpowering you. Truly a marvel.

But I prefer cheddar grated when I eat it by itself.
Mmmm.....I've tried crumbled feta, but never grated......*goes off to supermarket*

Meh, mostly the same (I didn't really go to the market just now- I was guessing what it would be like....)

Come on Amnestic, you know better than to make a thread like this.

Personally, I like cheese just the way it is. So I'll have to go with the closest option: Both.

I'd say it'd be dam impossible to grate fetta seeing as how crumbly and moist it usually is :D

I prefer sliced cheese, if it's in a sandwich. Otherwise it just falls apart, or in the case of cheese savoury sandwiches, squirts out the sides.

Cheese of choice is double gloucester, if it's for a sandwich or cold dinner (cheese, frikadelen, scotch eggs, assorted other cold snacks). Otherwise, brie.

Rotted bovine lactations are wonderful things. Of course, don't let that restrict one to the merely cow-produced wonders. I quite like Goat milk cheese when it's well made.

Triple-cream Brie is the Lord And Master of all. Especially with muscat grapes.

I have to go with Grated Cheese. Although all cheese is wonderful and should be treated as the food of the gods, but Sliced cheese can be a little overpowering sometimes, So classic Grated lovliness is my choice.

I like the sliced stuff. I am no connoisseur, but I do likes my slicified cheese.
Especially with peanut butter. Truly, the greatest combination known to sandwichkind.

I usually go for sliced. Partly because I'm too lazy to piss around with a grater and the resulting washing up, but mainly because biting into a big chunk of nice cheese is lovely. Doesn't even have to be in a sandwich, just a slice of cheese with Branston pickle spread on it... mmmm. In fact, it doesn't even have to be 'nice' quality cheese - ever had Sainsbury's Basics Red Leicester? Cheap as hell, delicious enough to just hack lumps off the block to eat every time you open the fridge.

That said, I can't resist a cheese and onion sandwich if I see one in a shop, and they're always grated. Except the Ginsters ones, but they're stupid expensive.

I like both. Grated mozzarella and parmesan on my pizza, or melted in a steak and cheese sandwich, it makes my mouth water. Those of you who say that cheese is a blight upon the earth, shame on you.
