Ok first off, I searched I remember a thread ages and ages ago but I couldn't find it and I thought with the Escapist's recent traffic boom an new thread might do the topic good.

So, In my opinion I think these child leash/harness things are disgusting I get that they are meant for kids who are hyper but expecting a kid to not be hyper is like standing infront of a hungry lion and expecting it not to eat very rare you. (/exaggerated comparison)

I understand "It's different if you are the parent" and I expect to get angry at my kids for being hyperactive little shits, but still I would never place a harness around them like an animal (also please don't bring up "why is it not ok for kids but it is ok for animals?, because 1.I'm not really sure and 2.It's not what we are discussing)

/short rant

Now it comes down to what you think of them.

Edit: I'm talking child being anywhere between either a early walker at 1 or in general 2-7. Although I once saw one on a 10ish looking kid.

I really honestly think it depends on the child and the location. If your bringing a four year old to a really crowded area? ... Well, you might want a way to keep track of him. Or the ability to hang yourself when he throws a temper tantrum. Its a win/win, that.

Heh, just kidding there. Seriously, though, about the leashes? They arn't the most -horrible- thing I've seen done. Imagen a kid with a choke collar? That would be bad.

its demeaning to both the child and the parent.
If you have seen some kids my mom has to teach and will be teaching for the next 2,5 years, and probably every class after them, you wouldn't say it's demeaning.

Those little monsters deserve this.

Of course, if a kid is obeying and knows how to act, then leash is not a good idea. Otherwise, add a shock caller.

Err...what? I mean sure...if the kid is old enough to realise it, but aren't they used on 2-4 years who've just learned to walk and the parents don't want em' running away? Any older and yeah I'd say it was demeaning.

My brother used to jump off the boat into the water (yes, I lived on a boat). In that case a short "leash" was necessary. I never got the "walk your kids" thing though. I half expect a mother in a fur coat trailing behind her child with a pooper scooper.

I see them all the time at the airports. I think they're a great idea, if only to stop you losing your child in the crowd.

I once saw a whole family wearing 2-metre high poles on their back with flags tied to the top! There's no way to lose eachother then!

I hate the parents that use them, but at the same time I can't help but laugh at the kids on the leashes.

Okay, this coming from someone who actually had wear one of those accursed things.

They are extremely demeaning, embarrassing, and restricting, but in some cases, necessary.

If you're in a really crowded place, and your kids are really young, then it's very useful to keep from losing them, and may even save their lives.

Although, that wasn't case when I had to where one.
Going to Disney World at the age of eight, with my grandparents holding on to my Baby Looney Toons wrist leash was the most embarrassing experience of my life.

My kid isn't a pet so I would never treat him as such. I don't mistreat my pets or anything, but dogs I have owned had a tendency to run off and come back in a day or so.

hmmm... debatable topic...

I do have a daughter, not old enough to walk or crawl... but i wouldn't put that thing on her.
I really don't know... i would've to think of possible scenarios.

But i am leaning towards a simple "no, i won't use that thing on my kids"

The poll is difficult for me:
On the one hand I find harnesses disgusting, as much on animals as on children.
On the other hand, CHILDREN ARE ALL EVIL LITTLE SHITS! which has nothing to do with harnesses.

And I fucking hate people who put their retrievers in harnesses. It's a fucking dog! Get a leash, get a collar, train your dog to behave.

I always thought that they were stupid. However, I just recently went to Disney where I saw a number of kids with them. I could see how they would be useful in certain situations such as this where there is a heavily crowded area and the parent might have to keep track of several kids while figureing out where they need to go.

Tell you what, we bought a leash for our last rabbit. Popped it on and he ran off. Hit the end of the leash, screamed (and if you haven't heard a rabbit scream... it is thoroughly unnerving). He turned around then ran the other direction, hit the end, screamed... then bounced back and forward about 5 times doing it, before he was let go to wander.

Thus once again proving Rabbits are smarter than small Human children.
I found this vastly amusing for some reason. *goes and googles rabbits screaming*

I was on one before when I was little, did me no harm and helped my mum cope since I was faster than the Speedy Gonzales. My mum would've had no way to cope really with me running around and my little sister to carry around - not to mention if we went shopping anywhere (you aren't LEGALLY allowed to leave your kids home alone).

Edit: This was when I was like 2 by the way. My sister less that one. It might have gone on for longer but I don't ever recall wearing one apart from pictures and stories.

You got me wrong there. I think that CHILDREN ARE ALL EVIL LITTLE SHITS! but shouldn't be put on restraints. Let them run around, hurt themselves, get bloody knees and bruises.
