Well season finale.... season.... is wrapping up and I guess it's time for a slew of cliffhangers. So far I've seen cliffhanger endings from NCIS, Criminal Minds, CSI: NY, and a minor one from the Mentalist (Yeah I like crime shows, so what?).
Frankly I find cliffhangers incredibly annoying as season finales, I don't mind two part episodes during the regular season, but to ask me to wait with baited breath for the entire off season is a little much.

So here's my point; what do you think of cliffhangers? What's the most annoying cliffhanger you've every seen?

Feel free to post the conclusions but if it's a relatively recent finale use spoilers.

I hate cliffhangers, I like for things to be neatly wrapped up at the end of a series.

A prime example is ReBoot, they finished series 4 on a cliffhanger then the show got bloody cancelled!

With the exception of weekly TV shows I despise them, they are a cheap way of getting people to hang onto a series. If you make a decent enough film/book/game then you shouldn't need to have the "What happens next?" scenario to keep people interested.

I don't like them, especially when there is no promise of a conclusion to the story arch.

They can be pretty annoying. There's also the possibilty of a good cliffhanger. A cliffhanger that doesn't scream " THERE WILL BE A SEQUEL" or a cliffhanger that leaves the right questions.

A cliffhanger, at the middle of the action, like Halo 2 is not a good cliffhanger. A cliffhanger for a sequel, that will never show itself, like Shenmue 2 is not a good cliffhanger.

I think it depends on the particular cliffhanger and the quality of said cliffhanger. If the ending calls for one, then fine, but if it could just as easily be wrapped up and doesn't need that kind of ending, or if the cliffhanger could happen but feels tacked on, then it usually turns out horrible.

Good show. Also, you just reminded me I have an episode recorded of that that still needs watching.

Some are just plain annoying eg the ones which leave you with no promise of a sequel or they don't leave enough unexplained so when the sequel does come out then its just one or two points and the rest of the movie is "filler". I know some things have done it right like Supreme Commander FA. The end cutscene has me gripping the chair to find out what happened[footnote]I haven't played Supcom2 because I heard it's horrible so I dont know if it is explained[/footnote]

In terms of television shows, it really depends on how they are used. Sometimes it bothers me, other times it's great.
