I like Serious Sam's co-op.(only played the Gamecube version) Both players go through the game but item pickups are separated. This fixes the problem where two or more people have to agree to only use a specific weapon because there isn't enough ammo for everybody.

I enjoy just having another player through the campaign the most. Left4Dead got a little annoying because they removed a few capabilities of a normal person for the sake of teamwork.

I carry heavy weapons and long range firepower. Sometimes snipe so i like it when games allow the co-op person to carry weapons which balence my weakness's. Like the two guys i game with, 1) likes to rush and use close combat techniques (he's not great but he makes a good distraction) and 2)the other uses explosives and medium range weapons a little to much for his sanity (team kills with over sized blasts...hence my prefering to stay away)
That's kinda how my friends and I play. I generally like to stay back and snipe or assault from med range, friend 1 is more of a rush-in-shooting-maniacaly guy and friend 2 plays support when available. While these are our usual roles, we mix it up a lot depending on the game, the situation and the weapons available.

I like it when there isn't enough ammo to use the same weapon as your partner. It forces you to really think about your weapon choice and mix things up a little. That way, both players won't end up doing the exact same thing.

Our favourite game to play together is Star Wars: Battlefront 2. So many hours spent on Galactic Conquest. The game has a great mix of characters that allows for many different multiplayer strategies. There I am, a Clone Trooper, trying to take a command post alone, surrounded by enemies, about to die. At the last second, my health suddenly fills up to 2/3 full. That's my buddy, who saw me in need and came and dropped a health/ammo pack on me. Then my other buddy rolls in in the tank he just spliced into. Together we manage to take out the rest of CIS droids and take the command post.

I can't tell you how many times that has happened. "It is impossible to win without working together with your team mates" gets my vote.

It can be good or bad, depending on the game and on the IQ of your partner. A example of a bad one is RE 5 AND STUPID, FUCKING SHEVA!! (and he mentally defective A.I.)

I actually started this thread because I felt Left 4 Dead had the wrong idea about what co-op should be but wanted to know what the Escapist thought.

I quite like co-op where you have to work together as a team, like Halo 3 on Legendary, and I also like it when you can do what but still get the same result (thinking of CoD 5).

Like the ability for the A.I to use pipe bombs and the ability to actually help you when you're in trouble.

I picked the last choice. It tends to lead towards the most fun in a multiplayer co=op experience without drama or BS. Everyone can bring their unique style of play to the table and can work towards the goal on their own merits. I know it sounds kind of awkward or dumb, but I think that it should in some way be possible for a few good players to carry one or two inexperienced or weak players.

I like the kind of co-op where I don't have to get two fully updated xboxes with 2 fully updated games connected. AKA, splitscreen. I went through this a lot this summer- took us 2 months to get L4D up and running.

More OT though, the kind of coop that requires teamwork but is not absolutely dependent upon it (like lame two person jumps, or pressing keypads within arms length of each other at the same time).

L4D style CO-op is the best. It would be nicer if it forced you to assume a role though, as in forcing people to use different weapons, or making different player trade off between speed and health, just to add a bit of tactical variety to the mix.

Online.

Always better cooperatively.
That was actually the game I thought of when I put option one up.

The PSO way.
A difficult game that increases its difficulty with more people, i.e. more enemies, boss battles that are less straight forward than before, and the like.

EDIT: Aww ninjad

Personally I like Co-op to be you and some friends killing AI controlled enemies on a single map (Left4Dead,Nazi Zombies,Horde mode)

Are the characters in L4D2 actually going to play differently (Big guy hits harder in melee but moves slower, redneck has better aim and reload time but worse physical stats etc...) or are they just going to be interchangeable character skins?

I don't know why, but I hate playing anything online, unless it's with my mates.

Actually I do know why, 90% of the Xbox live community is yank 13 year olds who use every second breath to pronounce 'douche'.

Hehehe this thread reminds me of Streets of Rage. So many times me and co-op partners would accidentally hit each other on that, then get pissed at each other and just use up all our lives beating the other guy's character. Good times...

I don't like multiplayer that much. I like to do my own thing, but I like to play WC3 with friends.

I just like MMO's. Especially if you know the people you are playing with. There is always some other dungeon you havent done yet together, and its always good fun to join a raid.
