We can all agree that Commander Shepard is essentially Chuck Norris in space, but we're given little insight into how he/she became the Reaper, *****-slapping machine he/she is.

Whether your Shepard is a paragon of virtue or a badass, fiery haired vixen, you had to decide in the original Mass Effect how your Shepard grew up and eventually joined the military, as well as the act that made them famous/infamous in the Alliance.

Now don't get me wrong, there's enough information to go by, with interactions with NPCs to Codex entries, but I thought it would be a nice feature in Mass Effect 3 if we, the player, got to see Shepard's past. I for one, would love to see a young, vunerable Shepard, survive an attack by Batarian slavers and then grow up to single handedly win the Skillian Blitz. Or see a young Shepard living in the slums of Earth with nothing but her wits and hardened emotional shell, but because of her indomitable nature, is the single survivor (yes, I know about that side-quest, so don't bother correcting me) of a Thresher Maw attack on Akuze.

It would be interesting to form your Shepard from those points. Is your renegade Shepard that way becasue she had to in order to survive the slums? Is your Shepard a paragon because he vowed, given the chance, to never let others suffer the way he did when the slavers attacked?

I know it won't happen, there's no real purpose of retreading old ground, especially if it detracts from the plot we bought the game for, so would you like to see it as DLC perhaps? Shepard telling his/her story to anyone who will listen? Maybe the weight of the universe on his/her shoulders is getting too much and he/she just needs to unload on somebody, perhaps his/her love interest?

What do you guys think? Should we just let our imagination fill in the gaps or do you think it would be cool to see Shepard's past in more detail.

Learn from the Star Wars prequels, your imagination does a better job than Bioware can possibly live up to.

they had some things in ME1 like corporal tombs or the instigator of the skilian blitz but they should show a little more just not to the point where it becomes the main thing and still allow the player to shape how you feel about it

remember that shepards past was multi choice. delving into the past kind of ruins the lore. leave it ambigious

I'd be sure to notify Bioware not to let George Lucas anywhere near the ME franchise :D

It would be intresting to see that and it's worth some thought..

Earthborn would have Some sorta Judge Dredd like story deal but Shepard would be apart of one of the gangs and Sole Survior would be like MGS Snake Eater on the Highest Setting... and in space.

But I think I'd like to see a spin off foucsed on the other conflicts in the Mass Effect Universe, The First Contact War or the Krogan Rebellions.

I think the idea here is for Mass Effect 3 to somehow have 6 small sidequests that actually take place during those formative years, sort of like how the third lord of the rings started with a flash back to Smeagol finding the ring.

I honestly don't think they need to do that. It would be nice of course, but everything they add to Mass Effect 3 to strengthen shepard's role in the game would be nice. But I would rather see other more important things added, throughout Mass Effect 1, we had 6 quests that were influenced by the choices, and they gave enough background for your shepard to show how those different early history events altered his personality and how he plays to or against the expected norms (Earthborn Ruthless Paragon for example is interesting to see in the Major Kyle and Earthborn quests)

It can only end in disappointment, as others said before we choose what his or her past is and have to fill in the blanks with our imagination. I like that, there´s too few people doing creative work (developing games, making films) who realise leaving things up to the player or viewer´s mind will create something far more interesting than what they can show us.

NO! the Shepards I've created have their motivations (In my mind there is only one way to match up the back-stories)and reasons for acting like they do. Leave them alone!

That being said I wouldn't mind maybe one more sidequest along the lines of what ME1 did with the blitz, the tenth street reds and Mrs (commander, captain? I can't remember her rank) Shepard. The little emails in ME2 were a nice touch it gives Shep a history and a story but absolutely no more than that!

I'm gonna have to roll no. Imaginations do a perfectly fine job. You already have a designated character, allow a least a little bit of personal back story crafting. The little tidbits did fine.

It would be cool if they found some legitimate, non-arse reason to to have a flashback for a brief playable insight to whatever background you chose for him.

I like that idea. The Lord of the Rings thing that is. The flashbacks could be broken up into segments, afterall, traversing the universe must have some idle travel time.
