Sex-ed sold it to me as one of those things that guys just do, like hunting bears and fighting hairy things that may or may not be bears.
*flexes muscles* now to go find myself something hairy to fight.

In all seriousness though, i think i recall something similar being said when we had sex ed at my school, but i've never recalled people wanting to compare their junk.

Dudes in the showers at the gym is just awkward. Eyes forward, no looking at downward angles unless you need to stare intently at your shoes. It happens, but it's most decidedly not a big deal. And Yeah, you're gonna notice wang, but by no means mention that you notice wang. Ever. It just makes things awkward. And by the love of all things sacred never comment on someone else's wang. Things that are unacceptable to broach when wangs are out:

"Daaaayyyyyuuum!"
"Huh. Snipped, eh?"
"So what's it like to have a hood on your head?"
"Awww, dude, how do you even find that thing?"
"So, leans to the left, eh? Nice! *high fives*"

These are all completely on the "do not" list. Yeah, you're gonna know, but don't ever bring it up. It just means you can never talk to them again. Really the conception that we measure and compare our junk to each other is something created by, and largely for, women.

It's happened around me, but not at school.

To be honest, when we were younger 11/12 the age when this sort of thing was supposed to be happening everyone was too embaressed to do such a thing. Now at 16/17/18 it does happen at times when I end up in communal showers with other my age. I don't engage in it, but you do get some people commenting on other peoples, activley comparing and asking opinions and whatnot. Normally happens early in the morning or late at night when I honestly can't be bothered so I just get on with my shower with the oblitagory 'the showers are colder than I'm used to.'

Im sorry to tell you this but your sex-ed teacher sounds like a raging pedo...

I wouldnt listen to anything he/she says no matter how tempting it is to get naked during school hours.

I know I know, your all probably thinking "But Raditz, what about danger-nudity, where you get naked in an empty classroom before the bell sounds and people start making their way from the playground to the door, giving you an adrenalin filled time frame in which to get fully dressed again!!! And what about getting naked in the depudty principals room while he/she is out running erands and then using the inter-com on the desk to summon every girl on your year to to the door to get free canteen vouchers, then rushing to get your pants back on and your buttons up". Well ok getting Danger-Naked is alright, just dont do it in your sex-ed classroom.

I miss high school.

Your options are very confusing. What were we supposed to be told or not? What are we answering yes or no to?
'Yes' means, "I've openly compared my penis to that of a fellow locker-room patron."
'No' means you haven't.

Try my dad. He's sort of hairy, and his name literally means Bear.

Also: Did the escapist just crash for anyone else?

I have been told from various sources about it. It has never happened to me and I've never heard of it happening though.

My friends tell me how people have gotten together and compared, not in the shower. I've never done it though.
Seems childish, and whoever wins means nothing.
Why do it? Its whole premise is based around making people feel bad and self conscious.

Who the hell has showers after P.E?

I was always told this would happen yeah, but there never was any showers in any of our schools, we just carried on with our day.
Maybe It's a mistranslation. I was told that what we call "Gym" - where we exercise, play basket or do some running or pushups or something - was called P.E. - short for physical education - in English-speaking countries.

And yes, after sweating for an hour or two, we take a shower before we go on with our day at school.
I thought that was pretty common practice. I certainly wouldn't want to walk around school soaked in sweat for the rest of the day.
actually i've never seen anyone shower after P.E. -_-

the last time that happened in my area/most people i know of..was way back in like 1980's

although they require you to wash your hair out at the least when you take swimming in high school, otherwise no showers ever.

I think its an American thing.

Well that helps reinforce what I always imagined the girls' changing rooms to be like. Such a magical place...

*sigh*

OT: Even if we did have showers together, we wouldn't be fucking measuring our dicks against one another, that's for sure.
just to point out this is definitely not an american thing, if it is, it's some odd subculture somewhere because i never hear of this happening anywhere, and i have quite a few cousins all over the place, or a private school thing.

oh and to finally get on topic, in a weird way yes and no, one time one of my super open/"i dont give a fuck" friends brought it up and a few others chimed in and it oddly became a hilarious "bro" moment of penis size/talk. I have no idea where it came from but it was a fun/odd conversation, so we did discuss it aloud amongst each other, but no actual dick showing was involved.

showers, at least where I went to school, were replaced by gratuitous amounts of Axe Body Spray. It made me gag so I'd try to get through the locker room as fast as possible. No time for comparisons.

Maybe its an American TV thing then? I don't know why, always got that impression.

It seems he was deceived by a lie - we all were.

That never happens because these days it would be considered gay and anyone who suggested it would be mercilessly bullied. Also, it is kinda weird isn't it? I mean, who just says, "Hey, lets all stare at each others d%#ks in the shower!"

ahh i see, i will admit american media definitely can make facepalm worthy things seem "truthful" to non U.S. citizens, I will clarify that definitely does NOT happen anywhere within the midwest of america (I have lots of friends in college who are from alot of different states and oddly enough we have had conversations about this kind of crap before.)

Just like the rest of adolescence.

I live in Norway, so I don't think it's an American thing. And I go to a public school.

When we were, like, 10-12 years old there were some who didn't want to shower, and some who showered wearing shorts. Still, when we had passed 14 people grew up and managed to not be so shy about being naked that it kept them from showering after having been sweating for an hour.

It's still sort of unbelievable to me that you don't shower after P.E.
Makes me want to create a new stereotype on British/American people: Smelly...

Mental comparison, sure, but I've never seen/heard of anyone going 'Dammit, your dick is huge!' or anything similar. Just a quick check to see how you stack up compared to others, then carry on.

Note that those wearing swimwear for communal showers are insecure.

Yeah, uh...no. This never happens. If anyone does try and initiate a conversation about other people's dicks (who are also present), somehow I can only see it resulting in a fairly deserved beating.

So showering after gym is something only Scandinavians do? I mean, I didn't if I could help it 'cos I had an inferiority complex x10,000,000 - also I'm half-Irish and was raised Irish Catholic - but everyone else in my class always did unless gym was last class of the day and they lived close to school. And even then people would still shower in school most of the time.

OT: I have no idea, as I'm a girl. But I've heard of it and always wondered if it was true or not. I think it's like most things of similar nature; it has some basis in truth but is by no means prevalent.
