Do you think Sony, Microsoft, PC companies, or Nintendo would be able to get along enough to make a console that could play games from even two of the above? Personally, in this economy, that is the worst thing possible in the gaming community. The only way it could possibly help in a stable one is if you want all of them but don't want to have to lug all of the around when you are gonna do a LAN party or something.

The only one I could see happening (sort of, but not really) is PC games + Xbox games, simply because of Microsoft's... hugeness. All the other combinations, no. And that's a good thing, if there were no competition there'd be one console and it would cost a ridiculous amount of money, because it wouldn't have to compete with anything.

I don't see it happening. Diversity is what keeps the gaming market alive, if two of them were to merge, things would become greatly imbalanced.

Agh! Ninja'd...

It's good to see at least a few people have an opinion on the subject. I've asked like ten of my friends and they said they never thought about it.

Only if aliens invade Earth and start selling their superior alien consoles on the international gaming market.

I think then, and only then, would companies like Sony, Nintendo & Microsoft stop their petty squabbling and work together for the future of humanity.

I'd say no (basically because of how companies work) but it would be interesting. If anything, Sony and Microsoft should team against Nintendo, though Microsoft should just fund and supply while Sony does the actual R&D.

I doubt it would happen for most of the reasons stated above, plus if they ever did make a hybrid console it would essentially become a PC and there wouldn't be any consoles any more.

At least until some other developer comes along and makes their own one.

The only way this could happen is if a 3rd company bought manufacturing licenses for both (similar to HDDVD/Blu Ray combo players) machines and created their own combo system. This would probably never happen though since

a)both companies would make that licensing cost prohibitive,
b)the end result would have a market price designed to earn money not lose money; making it too expensive for the consumer since it would be cheaper just to by individual consoles
c)no company out there has an internal infastructure to handle the headaches involved with console development and propr certification/QA resources

It will most likely not happen, but if it did then that would be the end of gaming.

Monopolies are expensive. If there was just one console, that one console could cost however much they wanted it to (they being the people who owned the copyright). Currently, the 360 is extremely affordable and the PS3 is only for those who can afford it. If there was a single console, they could make the price as high as $600 and still profit because there would be no alternatives. Everyone would save up their money to get it. Right now, if someone can't afford a PS3, they get a 360 first (unless they're a microsoft fanboy, in which case they'll never buy a PS3 even when they have the money). On the bright side, developers would only have to make one game, not 2 or 3 (360, ps3, and pc) which means they could devote more time and resources to making that game as good as can be. Also, people wouldn't have to worry about some awesome game coming out exclusively on the one console that they don't have. I prefer multiple consoles, one cheap and one expensive. That way everyone can play games.

NOTE: I know I never mentioned the Wii. That's partly because I hate that damn thing and partly because I was just referring to hardcore gamers. I've never seen a hardcore gamer choose the Wii over the 360, especially since they're the same price (the arcade version is actually $50 cheaper than the Wii).
