I for one think that 'competitive gaming' is a way of taking things that are meant to be entertaining far too seriously. However, I'd honestly like to find out what everyone else here things, and hopefully avoid any unpleasantness.

There's nothing wrong with it. Part of the entertainment is winning. It's the same in other sports, you can play football with jumpers for goalposts or you can play for a team in leagues. Both can be fun.

The only thing really wrong with it is when people who clearly are never going to be anywhere near the top devote their lives to trying to get there, however this happens in sports also.

I agree with you good sir. Then again I do prefer co-op to all-on-all death matches. There are tons of games out there, but some of these people only play one game for months on end to get their strategies perfect, I do applaud the conviction to perfection though.

What irks me more than it probably should is that people can get away with calling it a sport :p

So long as people play fair, I don't see a problem in it.

After all, a bit of friendly competition is great for human well being, and can be DAMN entertaining to watch!

But sometimes I can see it ridiculing gaming as a whole, as some people take it waaaaay too seriously.

EDIT: I also think its fair to class Competative gaming as a sport. Chess is a sport, and although people aren't jumping around and running about, the game does require a lot of skill, mental stamina, and a tactical mindframe.

I've never been to a tourney myself, but one only needs to watch some videos to get a rush from it.

Are they sports? I wouldn't say so, but if they can have stuff like darts and bowling on ESPN, a dedicated sports network, then I guess it depends on your definition of sports.

So yes, gaming competitions are very cool but I wouldn't personally call them sports.

I don't play them and I never will, but hey, its definitely a medium that requires skill and determination to master, so kudos to them if they do. Also, I find competitive players usually have their own servers/ game modes (e.g. MLG in Halo), so its not like they have a negative effect on my gaming...

I personally think it's pretty lame - you're taking something that's simply meant to be fun and taking it way too serioiusly. On the other hand, I'm sure people have a lot of fun in gaming competitions, so who am I to judge? It's just not something I'd partake in.

Sounds reasonable. I feel much the same way. However, calling them sports is a no-no. Also @azncutthroat. You could probably implement your stellar addition to this thread on your own poll which I can't see in the thread list yet.

Cool: "marked by calm self-control"

No it is not cool by that definition. To be cool is to be relaxed. Competitive gamers are not relaxed, and so are not cool.

I prefur co-op games to competitive ones, and I often prefur single player to multi player. I am a very relaxed person, I never rush anything and I avoid being too competitive.

I love tournaments and such, and love most E-Sports games.
Shows you that you will never actually be that good at gaming how ever much you dominate public servers, you would need to play with those people to get as good as them.

Then again a lone wolf who kills loads in a public match a lot of the time will fail horribly against an actual team.

I have no problem with it as long as the winners and losers are dicks.
And the competition has fare rules based on the game being played.

Id love to participate in fighting game tournaments.
I know i wont win right off the bat but, i would say im good at most of the FG's i play.
At the very least it would be great practice.

Nothing wrong with it, after all E-sports can also require a lot of skill and practise like any other sports.

Only issue i have with E-sports, and every other form of 'sport' by extension, is that it creates a load of dicks within each activity who think because they play at a more professional level that they are superior.

¬_¬ they should take their god-complex and piss off.

the thing i dislike about 'competitive' gaming is that it pushes people to win. Retarded point i know but, depending on the game, usually its just no fun watching people vying as if their life depended to win. There are always certain mechanisms which will make it easier to win a game, some little nack to give you an advantage

blah im making a mess of this but bear with me. Like with smash brothers on the cube, some people approach it just to enjoy, they hop around the level, try and explore new characters, attempt to vary their moves. Whenever i see people desperate to win they just revert to some kind of "tactic", some method of using what the game gives you in a way which promises efficiency if nothing else. Like to continue my example im sure at least some people know of "cheapachu" and how silly easy it is to stick to a small roster of powerful moves and finding a place to linger around which gives you the best advantage over anyone looking to curb your yellow ass

to summarise all that marblegargle its not as entertaining to watch (or participate in, in my experience) a game when people are just hell bent on "winning" instead of sharing an experience with people.

but i appreciate that same thing couldnt be said for like every game, and people arent necessarily jerks for being good at a game

I play Street Fighter and Super Smash Bros semi-competitively, and I have to say, I've never met a competitive player who was concerned with whether or not competing is considered "cool". We compete out of enjoyment for the challenge that playing against other skilled players presents, occasionally, to supplement our income. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Now, bringing a competitive attitude into play when you're gaming with friends, or otherwise just for fun... That's annoying. I mean, nobody wants to play with the jerk who absolutely has to win every time they play.

It makes the description of 'pro gamer' sound less retarded than it is.
Unfortunate.
