What should I look for in Motherboards? I've been recommended anything with SLI, but what are your thoughts?

When i was looking for a new rig i found most SLI-supported mobos to be way more expensive than ones that didn't support it. Personally i think SLI is silly unless you've got the money to spend. You don't need two gpu's unless you're an enthusiast.

- Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 (Dual-core 2.4Ghz) processor.
- nVIDIA 8600GS (Picked it up for $20 from a friend!)
- 2x1024MB DDR2 Corsair RAM (Has heat sinks on them, they rawk!)
- 500W Antec PSU

I was being pretty cheap when i upgraded as well. Next time i go spending i'm going to focus more on the GPU because the 8600 really isn't that great.

Oh, and i voted quad core. I mean, four is better than two. Who cares if they aren't necessary right now, because they probably will be in the future.

Currently running an Athlon 64 X2 6000+ overclocked to 3.2 Ghz, ASUS EN8800GT (just a regular 8800 GT at factory spec), 2 GB DDR2 667 Kingston ValueRAM (arguably the weakest link in this system, but doesn't make that much of a difference in practice, and DDR2 800 wasn't quite as cheap when I built the thing), Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro (most recent addition), along with a Logitech G5 (second revision) mouse and using Sennheiser HD 415 headphones for speakers, all together in an Antec Nine Hundred case.

Some time next year (not entirely sure when, but probably within the first half) I'll be upgrading again once the Intel Core i7s come down in price and there's some new video cards available. My CPU is starting to feel a little bit tired in games these days, to the point where it's actually limiting some, and while AMDs are still solid contenders for regular desktop PCs, for gaming, they just can't compete. My old CRT monitor is starting to die, so I'll need a new one of those at some point, which will likely come with a higher native resolution and thus will require a more powerful video card than the one I've got now.

My computer is a toaster welded to three deep fryers, a microwave, a sonar machine and a satellite dish.. The only scientist that found out how it worked hung himself due to the fact how my computer works defies all logic.

Nice one , I wonder what kind of games it is capable of playing . I guessing toast , french fries and microwave diners .

Well, make sure that the next RAM you get is DDR3 or something like that.....It's got nice and fast clock speeds compared to DDR2...

To stick with the subject of processors, it comes down to money. If you have the cash, go for the quad cores. They're definitely the better processor. However, Dual cores will still work for just about anything, just make sure you've got some gigahertz on it.

By the way, I was recommended RAM 1066mhz or higher. Is there anything higher? Is it a good choice?

P.S. Damn, that poll isn't helping anywhere near as much as I hoped.

If you want a nice case, I have an NZXT Zero. It has 7 12cm fans but is whisper quiet. It's about $130-$150 though.

Also, if you get DDR3 RAM, you're getting it for the same reason you're getting a quad core processor. Future proofing. Also, get Nvidia graphics.

I'm currently using a 1.4ghz Celeron M single core. Oddly enough, it can handle Oblivion.

intel core2 2.12gz Oc'd to 2.9 on air. 32 bit vista, 4 gigs of ram, Asus p5 mobo, and 8800gt, also xfi extreme. I am happy with my setup butwould go quad now 4 sure.

SLI is only worth it if you have a widescreen monitor

wrong, SLI will work just as well on a normal monitor as it will on a widescreen one

either quad or dual really, the thing is most programs don't take advantage of the multiple cores, the only game i know of that has done it was quake 3 and it was never fully completed if i remember correctly

basically most stuff runs on one cpu or the other and trades off, tho i think there's some trick intel's done to make it run across them all

Plays anything I throw at it and it didn't break the bank (back in January). Quad-core is definitely the way to go.

For graphics cards, I would reccomend an nVidia 8800 GTS to anyone (except my enemies, who I would reccomend fall off a cliff). It can handle any game I've ever seen, and handle them remarkably well.

I got dual core. Nothing really see anything that utilizes all 4 cores. And I won't buy one now since it will be out of date when something does utilize quad core.
