Maybe it's just a boston thing but the pronunciation of the word bagel has many of my friends split. I think its pronounced like bay-gle(bay as in the body of water and gle as in how its normally pronounced) but other say baah-gle(baah as in the noise a sheep makes and gle as in the normal pronunciation as previous).

So how do you pronounce the word bagel?

Baaaaahgel is a game and its spelled boggle.

According to the English language the e should make the a say its name. As in BAY-gle.

bay-gle, but with an very, very soft y, so much so that it's almost imperceptible.

Then again, English isn't my native language so I might be totally wrong on how it's officially supposed to be pronounced.

baygull

I haven't met anyone who pronounced it otherwise yet.

I believe the bigger war is between Sc-on and Sc-own for the word Scone.
That or Ramon noodles. How ever you say that.

Funny fact: "Bagel" is also a Yeshivish term for sleeping 12 hours straight, e.g. "I slept a bagel last night." There are various opinions as to the origins of this term. It may be a reference to the fact that bagel dough has to "rest" for at least 12 hours between mixing and baking,[14] or simply to the fact that the hour hand on a clock traces a bagel shape over the course of twelve hours.

I call it bread.
Really, as long as the point gets across, it's correct.

This website is excellent when it comes to pronunciation: http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=bagel&submit=Submit (handily linked to the word in question).

heh, here I was going to defend how I day the word bagel (bay-gull), but when I voted, it showed 100% bay-gull. Baah-gull sounds snooty to me.

I usually pronounce it Beh-gle, but Baah-gle doesn't really sit well on my tongue

so I go with Bay-gle

The proper pronunciation is Bay then Gull. It because of your silly Bostonian accent that majorly screws up your speaking of the word.

I've got a friend who I continually make fun of how she says bagel, she pronounces it more like "baggle".

Bay-gull is always how I've said and heard it said, except maybe one time when someone joking said "bah-gehl"

I know it's 'bay-gull', but as an in-joke, my wife and I call them 'baah-gulls'.

I was surprised to hear someone else on tv refer to them the same way recently, and now this. Heh. Neat.

Bay-gull is the only way I've ever heard it pronounced, except in this one commercial with a gnome in it that fell in love with a replica of the Statue of Liberty.
