This is what happens when I'm showering with nothing to do but think: random thoughts.

I'm sure many of us have noticed that a constant in the Magical Girl formula in anime is that the main cast is all, young girls. I'm curious about what would happen if we were to bump up the average age of the main cast by 50 or so years.

- Could such a plot be made to work for jaded adult characters?

- What would it be like and how would it differ from the norm, good and bad?

- If it simply is not feasible, what aspects of the magical girl formula would have to change to accommodate it?

Thoughts?

It'd probably make it less popular in Japan and the US, but if Google and Bing analytics are anything to go by, it'd end up being more popular in the UK.

Magical Menopause Madoka Magica maybe? The heroine will transform and magically save the day, right after she sits down to rest up and recover from another hot flush.

Maybe if you throw in a Hall or Abbey in the title.

Magical old ladies? So... Granny Weatherwax and c:eek:?

You beat me to it! :p

Really OT, I'd suggest reading the witch series by Terry Pratchett. Looks like it's just what you're looking for.
Neat. I'm actually in the middle of reading "The Light Fantastic". Who else but Terry Pratchett would think up a concept so charmingly off-beat.

I just checked out a summary on TV Tropes. The only thing is, it seems to fall a bit outside the Magical Girl genre as I understand it, since witches and wizards are fairly common in Discworld. My understanding was that the genre usually involves normal people whose everyday lives are interrupted as they suddenly acquire special powers, making them something like a cross between superheroes and people like Granny Weatherwax who gained her powers through study or whatever kinds of training witches go through in Discworld.

Still, I'm glad you brought it up. I need to hurry through The Light Fantastic so I can get to the Witch series.
