So I just finished Crysis Warhead. It's a good game, and needless to say it looks utterly amazing, to the point where I died a few times because I was too busy staring in awe at a looming alien death machine to remember I was supposed to be shooting at it.
I liked the original Crysis - it plays well, the nanosuit powers add another layer of tactics to the standard FPS gameplay, and it's probably the best looking game I've ever played. Nonetheless I have a love/hate relationship with it, due to the glorious open levels of the first 2/3 of the game being almost entirely abandoned in favour of many admittedly spectacular but linear as hell sequences in the final act. Warhead manages to avoid this pitfall and it's undoubtedly a better game for that, but...
...although it's still awesome it's not quite as awesome as the first game. Okay, it's shorter and you know what's coming, but it occured to me that, as annoying as they were, the setpieces of the first game really stuck in my mind, as spectacle, if not as gameplay, and that's something Warhead doesn't achieve quite as often.
So, Warhead - better as a game, but not as an experience, at least in my eyes.
If you've played both, what do you think?
