So I just finished Crysis Warhead. It's a good game, and needless to say it looks utterly amazing, to the point where I died a few times because I was too busy staring in awe at a looming alien death machine to remember I was supposed to be shooting at it.

I liked the original Crysis - it plays well, the nanosuit powers add another layer of tactics to the standard FPS gameplay, and it's probably the best looking game I've ever played. Nonetheless I have a love/hate relationship with it, due to the glorious open levels of the first 2/3 of the game being almost entirely abandoned in favour of many admittedly spectacular but linear as hell sequences in the final act. Warhead manages to avoid this pitfall and it's undoubtedly a better game for that, but...

...although it's still awesome it's not quite as awesome as the first game. Okay, it's shorter and you know what's coming, but it occured to me that, as annoying as they were, the setpieces of the first game really stuck in my mind, as spectacle, if not as gameplay, and that's something Warhead doesn't achieve quite as often.

So, Warhead - better as a game, but not as an experience, at least in my eyes.

If you've played both, what do you think?

Honestly, I want to play Warhead but I'm apprehensive, largely because of my opinion of Crysis itself.

See, I believe Crysis to start off as an absolutely outstanding game, literally being able to play however the hell you want, sneaky bollocks run around, check, speed mode and hurl enemies through walls? Check. Soak up bullets and go nuts? Check.

But then the second half comes along and it just descends into an absolutely piss poor, bullshit excuse for a generic as shit FPS.

But if Warhead actually abandons that particularly massive failing, then I might go for it.

Eh, I never really cared for Crysis. The wonky AI and infinitely spawning enemies made it rather annoying for me.

I whole-heartily dislike Warhead.

Third-person cutscenes, automatic ammo pick up, laughable Korean baddies and annoying protaganist. Worked as sidekick but not as a main figure. Besides the game didn't tie up the lose ends from Crysis 1 which I'd hoped and now that those tards over at Crytek abandons the storyline from Crysis 1 we will probably never get to resolve one of gamings most annoying cliffhangers.

You'll enjoy Warhead. There's still a couple of don't think-just shoot sequences later on, but they're not nearly as prevalent as the first game.

Hard to disagree with that - some of the cutscenes are a bit melodramatic, and the auto ammo pick up surprised me (though I see it's not active on the higher difficulty level) and yeah, the villains are a bit bad 80s action movie, but it's still fun.

Alrighty then, a couple I can tolerate, just so long as the entire second half doesn't go down that road.
Thanks, gives me an excuse to finally pick it up.

I hear it's better optimised than the original Crysis too, any truth to that?

Yes, it certainly seems to be. The original ran pretty good for me on high settings up to the last two levels where I had to drop to medium to avoid regular crashing. Warhead gets just as busy but ran smoothly all the way through on high.

Good to hear, I had the same situation with the first Crysis, ran on high fine and dandy up until the last two levels where crashes galore came about.
Glad Warhead runs better then, I'll certainly try and pick up a copy next time I see one.
