We can all guess what the general story of the new Deus Ex is going to be: cybernetics have caused a cultural divide and now a cybernetically-enhanced agent must operate in a hostile environment, or something along those lines anyway.

Well, between that trailer and the Droid commercials that have been flooding my Hulu time, I've been thinking about cybernetics (the science of enhancing carbon-based lifeforms with mechanical and electronic parts) a lot. So much so that I started thinking about the actual possibility of cybernetic enhancement.

So I thought I'd ask the Escapist: What are your thoughts/feelings on cybernetics? Assuming that the technology is viable, what enhancements would you wish for? What would your position on the process and technology be? Would you support it and use it? Support it but not use it? Not support it at all?

As for myself:
I'd definitely support the technology and a person's right to use it. I think it'd open up all kinds of opportunities in fields like physiotherapy and vision correction. For myself, I'd probably get my arms replaced with multi-rotation replacements designed for scaling, get my lower body completely replaced so that it's designed for high-impact falls and gripping and get one eye replaced with a high-resolution camera with zoom function and a holographic projection that shows calculated distances, forces and angles.

I don't think I'd get any myself, I'd be more the kind of person that decks himself out in technology instead. But I wouldn't be opposed to other people doing it, as long as it was a long-thought choice. Kinda like how I'm ok with people getting plastic surgery but as long as they do it to turn into their own person, not due to social pressure. And I also would be against people doing it to do better athletically, but that'd be at a personal level, not a political one.

Though otherwise, my first choice would definitely be replacing my legs below the knees. My feet are basically as flat as you can get and I have some slight uncurable problems in my calf muscles so that's an actual (relatively) defective part of my body. But I like my thighs and they serve me well enough, so I wouldn't want to go any further up.

I would be all for having some small enhancement done to me but at some point i would worry about being more cyborg then human. Would my concept of life change sense i am not limited by normal threats and danger? And also the fact that relying on technology rather then my human flesh could also purpose some problems.

I see my life long dream of becoming a super-hero coming into fruition :D

I like the idea, true. For what I'd pick, I'd take something similar to yours. Because if I can enhance my physical abilities, why not make myself a superhero? Arms and legs that'll help me scale walls, fall down great heights unarmed, better vision (I'm actually short-sighted), give myself an artifical pancreas.

Well, not much else. Limbs is basically the extent of what I'd let them change on me (except for, y'know, that). Only other viable options I can think of are the ears, when I would have hearing problems, to some thingamajig that could fix them (especially if one is completely deaf).

Only thing I'm worried is that it's metal. Wouldn't it, I don't know, rust?

I'd do it, I love the prospect of enhancing my abilities to super human level. So, yeah I'd do it in a heart beat.

I'd support their existence for people who need it.
Like if your eyes go or you get paralyzed or depending on how advanced these things are then if someone's brain starts going out have that upgraded too.
But it's all a slippery slope to misuse and abuse of the new found power.
Kinda like Deus Ex... anyway.

But if there wasn't a pressing need for me to get one I wouldn't get it.

Although arm blades might be fun.

I think bionic implants are incredible, as long as they don't malfunction/kill you.

Well my eyes suck, so they are getting replaced.
My right wrist often hurts, getting fixed.
other then that, I don't want to get too extreme with cybernetics.

Maybe once it's a completely seamless transition from organic matter to cybernetic bodies. In the meantime, I think it'd be cool if they could find a way to make muscles and ligaments more durable and more elastic.

Ha! I've been pretty interested in getting cybernetics eyes now ever since that Droid commerical I keep seeing. I wouldn't mind getting a couple other implants or boosters that would increase my physical prowess as well. I wouldn't want to get to the pointer where I'm more machine than man though and I'd be a bit hesitant to replace vital organs completely (it would be really bad if they short-circuited).

Totally! I would only want what ever could possibly extend my life, as well as help me take over the world...

But, only if I would somehow be EMP resistant, and can't be hacked into, or malfunction.

Yes in the regards I would like implants to heighten my reflexes and give me better vision, more specifically night vision. Granted I already have 20/20 vision, it would be awesome to have even better sight.

Yes, but only if I know the possible effects. I'd love to have cybernetic eyes though, so I can see without glasses. (I know I could get laser surgery but cybernetic implants are cooler.) A cybernetic arm would be cool also.
