So I had a discussion with a friend over The Escapists new video series 'Daily Drop'. Now, in the teaser for Daily Drop you see an Xbox 360 about to meet it's end but, as a good teaser trailer should, it cut away before you see any of the damage.

The discussion we had about this was whether or not the Xbox 360 will actually open. Let's assume they don't mess with the case at all, will the case break open? Or will the case stay closed and the insides get all messed up?

I believe it will open, for a couple reasons.
1. Why would they bother showing it in the teaser if all it does is bounce a bit?
2. The 360's case is NOT strong enough to endure that high of a fall onto concrete.

For their first episode (which shows you how high of a fall it will actually be) visit

Funny, I also had a discussion with a friend over the xbox360 drop.

I don't think it will open up, but the insides are absolutely going to be all sorts of screwed up.

As for your reasons:

1. The trailer you link shows them dropping a dead fish which seems to do nothing but bounce around a little. So apparently they do bother to drop things that don't explode (although it is much less entertaining).

2. After fondling my 360 I think it may depend on how the 360 lands, but we will see!

It'll definitely depend on how it hits the ground, but if it hits right it could break open, and I definitely hope it does.

Judging by the height and the angle at which it's going to hit the floor, I'd guess that the faceplate will pop off, but the rest of the case will remain intact.

The faceplate only clips into the frame, so those clips will easily pop or even shear off by the force of the impact and the faceplate will go flying, but the actual case is screwed in (by 4 long screws under the rubber feet) so I think that will stay on.

Microsoft have constructed it to be relatively tamper proof, so I doubt you'll be able to remove the case completely just by "prising" it open (by "prising" I mean only using external force and no tools), or in this case "prising" with extreme prejudice.

Honestly, I don't really know, but I'm going to gamble on "Yes, it will smash open and spew parts all over the deck.". Why not? I own a PS3, after all. Heh heh.

It will open up and candy will fall out. It's a little known fact that early 360's were, in fact, re-purposed Piñatas.

They did design it to be tamper proof, but they didn't design it to be invincible. I'm sure they're aware that if a fall like that does occur, and the case opens, it's not like you're going to have anything left to tamper with. The faceplate coming off is pretty much a definite, I don't think anyone will argue against that.

It's true, the fish certainly looked anti-climactic, but it might look cool in slow-mo to see how it moves when it hits. Does it bend? Ripple? Or just slide down in the most boring of ways?

How do you think the force of that impact compares with a AK47 or .50 bullet?

I know they're different types of impact, but if the kinetic energy from a large calibre bullet didn't pop open the case, then I'm not sure that drop would.

Obviously in those videos, especially the first one, the bullets absolutely destroyed the case, but they didn't actually pop it open (which is the original question being posed)... the case, or what was left of it, was still attached to the console by the case screws, so I don't think that one drop would be enough to destroy the threads of those 4 screws and allow the case to pop open.
