Was going to vote Gannon, but had to vote Arthus, just so ya'll know, I hate WoW. In Warcraft 3 though, which I really enjoyed, he was the ultimate badass, the Snake Plissken, Mr just don't give a fuck, and he kicked enough ass to back it up.

Sauron.

HIS name, and even the place where he dwells are not to be said allowed.
HIS mere presence fouls the landscape around him.
HIS armies are huge.
HIS followers fear and worship him as a god.
HE is a symbol of absolute power and can corrupt anyone or anything he comes into contact with.

So much of the evil that occurred in Middle-Earth can be linked to Sauron's corruptive influence. Before, he reached M-E, Sauron had already been involved in the destruction of an entire race (Numenor). On arrival, he immediately sets a plan in motion to corrupt every human, dwarf and elf on M-E. He 'gifts' them with the knowledge of how to create powerful magical rings, thus allowing them to create the instruments of their own destruction!

HE is just evil personified.
So many problems with that paragrah i presume you've just read the last half of the Similirion and missed the bit where he was just a leutenent, got owned by a dog, was already in middle-earth, hid, got owned by the numerdorians, pretended to be a good person for 100s of years, died, lost the ability to shape shift, respawned and then managed to get defeated by a weakened force of elves and a couple of numerdorians who where also weaker than the had been while fighting melkor

Ganondorf was defeated by a diminutive Robin Hood-wannabe in tights. Palpatine was defeated by his own lieutenant and his farm-boy son. Sauron was defeated by Frodo Baggins.
Fixed that for ya.
I lose one hundred geek points. :(
It's alright. In a way, I was wrong too. I mean, Samwise was the one who threw the Ring into the fire, so...
Gollum fell into the fire while holding the ring, actually.
Didn't Sam push him?
nah Frodo did it in anger after he got his finger bit off by the little bugger.

Darth Vader.

Revan is a Vader wannabe, Palpatine is an old corpse, Sauron gets his power from a ring, and Ganondorf just cant take a hint.

So evil, one name is just not enough.
The rules say no Satan.
one question? how can Revan be a Vader wannabe if Revan was alive several thousand years before Vader?
The easist answer is quite often the best, he is an idiot.

That said, revan. He was the guy that put the mandalorians in their place and then went out and found a doomsday machine that would have ascended him to godhood if he didn't have a case of amensia and snooty snarking jedi come and buttfuck him while his apprentice was being a dick and blowing up the star forge he spent ages finding.
well good work. you just managed to summarize the entire game in 1 1/2 sentences. but that was the jiff of it.

I'm surprised Voldermort's not here.
GAH! Knew I forgot someone...
You have Big Brother (a nonexistent figurehead) listed as a Dark Lord, but not Voldemort? That's...kinda surprising.

I mean, my vote still goes towards Sauron (yes, even over Morgoth, the gambit with the Rings of Power was that badass), but Voldemort is still pretty high up there. If you get over the fact that he's basically localized in Britain, he's a cold-blooded psychopath, master of asstons of dark magic, terrorizes a large geographical area even after his apparent death, and manages to be essentially unkillable except through convoluted means.
Yeah, I admit it was a mistake not to include the V man. I just haven't read/seen the Harry Potter books/movies in a long time, and I just finished reading 1984. So Big Brother came to mind before he who must not be named.

Meh, I picked Gannon because he's the only one who keeps fucking coming back every single time he gets defeated. Sauron? Let me drop this ring in some lava! DEAD. Palpatine? Got pushed down an elevator shaft (or its equivalent). DEAD. The Lich King is cool, because at least it takes 40 people to take him down, but still. DEAD.

Maybe in the movie. Not in the book, though, and I hated the third movie so I don't count it.

Sauron is unstoppable, the whole thing about him dying and his reign being destroyed by a hobbit was all a fluke.

Mm... I liked the set-up and camerawork of the first one, and the sheer sense of epic inherent in the second.

Only thing I really remember from the third movie was Legolas killing the Oliphaunt and Gimli saying "That still only counts as one." While funny, it turned the scene into a buddy-cop flick for me. Not good.

Treya from KOTOR 2. She didn't want to conquer the galaxy, she wanted to destroy the Force itself (which would theoretically extinguish all life in the universe) and came close to pulling it off...

Big Brother being the runner-up. For several reasons: first, he was commentary on real people and events. Second, he is a sneaky ************; everyone is too paranoid to oppose him. Third, he forces potential rebels to constantly question WHY they want to oppose him. Finally, he might not even exist. Yes, that's right, he's most likely a group rather than any one person. That makes him scarier because he's an IDEAL, and those don't go away, they don't die quietly in the night. As long as the people believe in him, he's immortal, and without the assistance of pathetic magic.

The Overlord from Overlord, because the Overlord is me.

I don't know who Arthus or the Overlord were defeated by, but going by the other three, it was probably pretty embarrassing for them both.

The only possible choice IMO is Big Brother. "He's" the only one of the entire list who succeeded in everything he did. Partly, of course, because there was no Big Brother - just a succession of greedy bureaucrats using the cover of fake socialism to screw everyone over for their own benefit. Not entirely unlike the modern day British Labour Party (also advocates of universal surveillance, except when it comes to their own wage packets). And that comparison was FAR too easy to make.
Although I agree with The MadDoctorsCat, Big Brother was by far the most successful, The British Labour Party are probably the most dangerous/successful of the Dark Lords, largely because they actually exist.

I said Sauron, but compared to Morgoth, Sauron was a pansy.

Melkor will prevail! Tremble before his Balrog army!

I gotta say Ganondorf. Sure, he sucks at his job, and he's just not good at... confrontations, but he have to admire his persistence. I'm mean, he's had his plans foiled over what is probably the course of several centuries, by the same kid too. He's been shot with arrows made of pure light, stabbed in the face chest, you name it, and this guy still comes back for more!

Oh, I voted for Arthus, I thought it said arthritis. Man, cause that stuff hurts like the dickens. You young whipper snappers what with your Dark Lords and your rock and roll music. You are all on the pot aren't you?
