I and most people I know usually say Day-ta, but I hear either frequently and myself will sometimes switch just for giggles. As far as I'm aware there isn't a 'correct' American pronunciation in this case, or at least if there is nobody seems to give a crap.

IMO, it depends on the context.

When speaking to the android from Star Trek, it's Day-ta. When speaking of information, it's dat-a.

I used to say Dat-a until I watched Star Trek NG. Weird enough, Data is my fave ST character.
