These are the 2 arcs that people fight over which is best, some say DBZ should've ended in the Freeza arc and other say that the Cell arc is much stronger. Me personally I prefer the Cell arc, the backgrounds were more interesting and I liked the public's reaction towards both Cell and the androidsmore characters got to shine, and I felt that Cell was a stronger antagonist than Goku

Some fan you turned out to be - it's spelt "Frieza."

Anyway, I can't call myself a DBZ fan per se, but in the scope of what I've seen, I prefer the Frieza saga. The Cell saga started the power creep factor of the series - you're either a saiyan or you're useless, Goku's ability to go super saiyan isn't special anymore, Cell's motivation is "I want to destroy everything because...I'm the best?", and Cell himself feels like fanfiction in a sense, taking the abilities of multiple characters and being some uber form of all of them. Frieza isn't the most in-depth character in the world, but his motivations at least have some rationale (power and personal gain), and he had far more intimidation than Cell.

Going back to the series, I really like both Sagas. However about the time that the the Garlic Jr/Trunks saga aired on Toonami, I was eight and it was the best thing I'd ever seen. Also I felt like the Namek moments leading up to the Frieza fight can drag on a bit. I never felt that way about the Android Saga. However, I'm also seeing all of that through nostalgia goggles.

Frieza's better in manga/Kai form, since the filler stuff in the Z anime *really* dragged it down. Since I refuse to watch original Z any more, I'm going for Frieza. The final battle is such a classic.

Cell saga's still damn good though, and yeah it did come out of the original anime slightly better.

Neither. The only good Dragonball anime was the first 20-30 episodes of the original Dragonball, when "pacing" was a thing that happened.

Saiyan Saga was the last arc that was halfway decent. Frieza arc had me tearing out my hair in boredom, and I never watched Cell because I quit after Frieza. Seriously, 30 episodes of fighting Frieza. THIRTY!

I could go on for a very long time about all the problems DBZ has compared to DB.

Cell Saga for the reasons you described. The Abridged version too, which went out of its way to lampshade just how samey and long the Namek Arc was. Earth had far more diverse locales, even if most of them ended up looking like a wasteland before long due to collateral damage.

(Lord) Freiza is certainly terrifying, but there's not much to him past that but sheer cruelty and arrogance. The Androids ran the full range of personalities and powers, and even Cell had to actually earn his transformations though cunning and subterfuge instead of just bringing in another one whenever the heroes thought they had his number. I liked how when he first arrives expecting to flatten everyone, Piccolo straight-up beats him down, forcing a temporary retreat until he's gotten strong enough to snatch his prize at the right moment.

The only major complaint I had was that the new Super Saiyan transformations were underwhelming. The first was a massive shift, but the others added nothing but masses of muscles, and more lightning for Gohan. His in particular should have been more dramatic visually as well as in terms of story power since it was what they were all striving towards for half the arc.

Freiza gave us the Ginyus, but Cell gave us Hercule Satan, champion of the world.

A vote for neither. Both were extremely good and perhaps most importantly were pretty different from each other so it didn't get repetitive. I will say that the Buu saga was far too comedic far too often, so while I enjoyed it overall it was definitely the weakest out of the 4 sagas of DBZ. To clarify, I'm talking about the original Funimation dub here, NOT that godawful Kai dub.

Frieza, for being the last Saga where not Supermen could actually...you know, be more than body bags.

Cell, because I really dug Android 18 and the fact that freaking GOHAN was the most OP of them all. Kind of made me lol.

Freeza. I only read the manga, but there, it really gave you a sense of wonder. Before, you only got one or two really powerful villains at a time, but now the heroes went into space, where fighters were in an entirely different league.

Hmm, the culmination of Vegeta's character arc is in the Buu saga, and Vegeta is the most interesting character in DBZ. So... the Buu saga.

I mean, come on. In the Freeza saga Vegeta was just allied with the Earthlings out of desperation. In the Cell Saga, Vegeta is just useless. He doesn't do ANYTHING worthwhile except offer the last distraction against Cell so Gohan could finish him off. In the Buu saga, Vegeta a)impulsively decides to let himself be brainwashed because he feels like he's gone soft, b) realizes his mistake and sacrifices his life to try and save his new family, c) lets go of his pride (!!!) to fuse with Goku to defeat Buu, and d) finally accepts Goku as a friend once Buu is finally killed.

If Vegeta is your favorite character in DBZ, and he should be, the Buu saga is where everything great about him comes from.

Well, he was the galactic top dog up until that point, supremely confident in his own superiority, yet also highly paranoid about anyone potentially surpassing him. Especially any monkeys maybe going legendary Super Saiyan. Hence why he blew up planet Vegeta and why he wants to wish for immortality. Both are to ensure Frieza stays queen ***** of the universe (even if someone stronger pops up, he'd still win through attrition).

At least, until DBS retconned the former into an order from Beerus, who wanted the Saiyans gone for exactly the same reason Frieza did in the original canon. Just replace legendary Super Saiyan with legendary Super Saiyan God.

Cell Saga. I've always liked Gohan as a character and seeing him become Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 and toy around with Cell was pretty entertaining to see. Plus I also liked the music that played during the saga too.

I like both for different reasons:

Frieza is, in my opinion, by far the better villain of the two. Has much more character and backstory over Cell, which is pretty much just "Another android, deal with it."

Gohan was always my favourite character though; so seeing Gohan be the main focus was awesome + I thought the way they handled his transformation was well done.

In terms of structure and pacing: I felt Frieza saga was better. More of the characters feel like they're worth caring about.. or just worth anything in general. By the time Cell comes around it is becoming apparent that half of the characters in the show are now just useless sidekicks.

Think overall Frieza saga is slightly better.

Power, control, wealth, etc. His army, including the saiyans, conquered various planets so they could be sold. In Frieza's case, he wiped out the saiyans because he feared that they might become too powerful to control.

Like I said, Frieza's motivations aren't that in-depth, but there's at least a rationale behind them. Cell has a rationale too, but it's a far more generic one - "I'll be the best there ever was, and if I am the best, I'll destroy the Earth because my creator hated it, and I'm loyal to a man I never met."

Also helps that Frieza does have some shades to him. On one hand, he's extremely sadistic. On the other, he does have some warped paternal relationship with Vegeta. Going by the original dub, it's indicated that he has some fondness and even respect for Vegeta, but not so much that he isn't going to beat him to a bloody pulp. Also fitting thematically that it's Goku, an atypical saiyan, who defeats the monster that wiped out his entire race.

Both it depends on what parts.

Story wise? Frieza Saga by far. Watching Gohan and Krillin struggle against all odds was great. Vegeta being forced to make unlikely alliances and his betrayal to his former master is great.

The final Fight goes to cell tho. Gohan being the hero who wins was so fucking cool. He felt like he had finally become the true protagonist of DBZ instead of the unofficial true protagonist of it. (I think of Gohan as the main char of DBZ more then Goku)
