Poll: Dead Space 2 story...

Do i need to finish dead space 1 to understand the story of 2? i got 2 earlier (the CE =D) and i want to play it but i never finished 1. I got to the point where i had every weapon, and plenty of supplies as well as a level 4 suit, and with no major story, i lost interest in playing. Do i need to trudge through the rest to understand 2 or are their just bits and pieces?
PS i know Isaac's girlfriend died, ign's review accidently gave me the spolier =P.

Well i knew that =P i meant is it worth playing, cuz if i do read the story id have no reason to EVER finish the game. can i just start 2 and then go back and finish 1 some day when im bored?

I see no reason to, the story is mostly told in text logs anyway, and gameplay it's the same dismemberment

Just watch a walkthrough or cutscene walkthrough of Dead Space 1 to get the story, thats what I just finished doing....cause I'm sure not gonna play it myself...on my horribly pathetic laptop...thats a mac...

THe cutscenes give a good idea of the story and it doesn't take long to watch them all.

I wouldn't say you "need" to play the first one, but I'd suggest a walkthrough for what you havent seen yet

The story is greatly enhanced if you understand the events of the first game, most notably the flashbacks and unitology and all that, but even for someone who played the first game a lot the story has some suprising twists that mean more if you understand the universe.

I'm only on chapter 6, so I can't really comment on the story as a whole, but I'd say its good to have a rough idea, at least, of what happened in the original.

Dead Space 2 is fun, but it really is just Dead Space 1 "Upgraded" edition.

If you didnt finish 1, why do you even want to play 2?

(you should really finish 1, the final boss is a blast)

Kinda OT, but since there are no other DS2 threads, does anyone else find the game less scary now? I've played for 4 hours straight and yet I could barely play the original for 20 minutes without someone to keep my morale up.

well i put in DS 2 and they had a cutscene explaining the first games plot =D. Only thing i missed was discovering the red pillar thing and my gf dying. big loss eh?
