Well folks after a successful first round, where Master Chief could not overcome the First Lady of Gaming, Samus Aran, Deadliest Video Game Warrior is back with a vengeance. This time, we'll stay away from power armor and bullet calibres, and duke it out with swords and silence. In this round, we'll pit the Hero of Time against the One-Winged Angel. Get ready for a brawl, because it's Link vs. Sephiroth!

This time, I'm leaving it ultimately up to the fine Escapist Community to ultimately decide the winner. I'll present my opinions and observations, and then make my pick. Feel free to pick your own winner, and on April 29 at noon I'll declare the winner!

*Disclaimer*
I have, in the past, been very outspoken about my extreme dislike of the Final Fantasy series. I will, to the best of my ability, be impartial in this.

As always, the format is set up like this:

- Tale of the Tape (description of their experience, their stats, etc)
- Comparison of their Sword
- Ultimate Victor (based on the performance in the combat scenarios, who wins the fight)

TALE OF THE TAPE

Link

Years of Experience: Debuting in 1986, Link has a lengthy resume spanning 23 years. In terms of game years, it's impossible to pin down an exact figure because of the ambiguity of the Zelda timeline; However, he has fought through several generations' worth of conflict.

Height: Link's height can vary from game to game (and sometimes can vary within the same game!). On average, he stands about 4' 8". As an adult, he probably stands about 5' 6". However, he can stand over 8 feet tall while wearing the Goron mask, or can be immense while wearing the Giant's Mask.

Weight: Again, Link's height varies from game-to-game and form-to-form. A rough estimate, excluding his equipment, is 120 lbs.

Skills: Link bears the Triforce of Courage, an ancient Hylian relic that marks him for greatness. He is an expert swordsman, equestrian, marksman, and mime.

Victories: Link has stopped Ganondorf from stealing the Triforce (countless times). He also has saved many a parallel world (or Island).

Nemesis: No matter how many times he is pierced by the Master Sword, Ganondorf always seems ready for more. He has captured Princess Zelda, taken over Hyrule, and tried to claim the Triforce as his own countless times.

Sephiroth

Years of experience: Stalking on to the scene in 1997, Sephiroth gives a definitive edge to his opponent. While he's only really been in three games (I'm sorry, but remakes and spin-offs of FFVII don't really count in my book), his actions speak volumes.

Height: Sephiroth stands at 6' even, towering over Link in his normal appearance. This height, of course, only refers to Sephiroth as normal.

Weight: Sephiroth's weight is unknown, but I would estimate around 160 lbs. While he is slender, he is a former elite soldier; his size is presumably mostly muscle.

Skills: A former soldier of Shinra's army, Sephiroth has incredible skills with his sword Masamune. He is also incredibly brilliant, devising many intricate schemes to try and corrupt the Lifestream. His powers are increased immensely when manipulating Materia, even being able to summon Meteor.

Crimes: Sephiroth has tried, many times, to corrupt the Lifestream of Gaia. Doing so would allow him to control the populace of the world. He has also committed many attrocities, including the slaughter of Shinra, and the destruction of Nibelheim.

Nemesis: Cloud Strife, who bears a personal grievance with him, has stopped Sephiroth's schemes, and killed off the one-winged angel before.

And now, into the match-up itself. To avoid this thread spinning off into a "Sephiroth can summon Meteor" or "The Light Arrows would destroy him in one shot" arguments, we'll make this a true duel: Master Sword vs. Masamune, a battle of two of the greatest blades in all of gaming!

Equipment

The Master Sword: The Blade of Evil's Bane. When Link draws this blade from the pedastal of time, he completes a part of his destiny, and becomes the true Hero of Time. A magical blade that does incredible damage to anything evil, the sword can easily be wielded in one hand. When infused with even more power (such as the Sol orbs from the realm of the Twili) the sword can one-hit kill most enemies, and only needs a few hits to kill others.

Masamune: A massive 4 1/4 foot long sword wielded with lethal efficiency by Sephiroth. This blade, while it looks impractical, can effortlessly be used in one hand. Many innocent people and soldiers of Shinra's army alike have been slain by this blade, and it impaled Aerith in one of the most touching moments in video game history.

In the duel of legendary blades, I have to give the advantage to the Master Sword. Masamune is, without a doubt lethal, but the Master Sword simply is more powerful. The skills of the two combatants cancel each other out; Sephiroth has evil schemes to destroy the world, Link has stopped Ganon (who tries the same thing) countless times. Sephiroth can transform into multiple, increasing-powerful forms, while Link has struck down many would-be bosses who try the same tricks. Therefore, the battle comes down to a test of skills with the sword. I would argue that the swordsmen have practically equal skillsets, so it all comes down to the sword for me. And, true to it's name, the Master Sword is without equal in this match-up.

Well, that's it for another round of Deadliest Video Game Warrior! Remember to vote before April 29th, and may the best man with fairy ears win.

Very nice, I think the last one was better tho. I did sense a bit of prejudice, not as to I like FF anyways.

Ummmmmmmm.............
Masamune is traditionally about 14 feet long, not 4.

Guess who I'm voting for!

Yeah, first time I saw that sword I though "how the hell does he pull it out of a sheath." Not that he keeps it sheathed. . .

He does, I've seen the replica, the sheath 'pops' open and the sword slides out sideways.

Only practical way to pull a sword longer than a longsword. That's how my sword is set up: I pull it up a bit over my shoulder then swing it out of the sheath sideways.

Much as I love Link, Sephiroth has quite a few advantages over the Hero of Time:
a: He can fly. As such, he can strike Link from 14 feet in the air, giving the Master Sword no chance to attack him.

b:His entire being is focused around the so-called "Jenova" cells, as explained in FF7: Crisis Core. He was designed (not born) and his design is oriented towards ridiculous fighting ability and attack power. Even Genesis, considered by many to be the "Ultimate SOLDIER Operative," couldn't even scratch him in a training battle they had (awesome cutscene in the game: one of the only ones I actually sit and watch every time it comes around). Of course this can be hotly contested, as Genesis' makeup was such that he was degenerating, however it is said in the game that his degeneration started after he was cut by Masamune: draw your own conclusions. I actually don't know how Cloud managed to kill him.

c: He studied for (I can't actually remember how long, but a long time anyway) in a desolate casle to understand his being. He may have gone insane; I think that's why he betrayed Zack, Cloud, and Shin-Ra (though I find it hard to empathize with a company that god-mods it's soldiers): he was driven to madness by his discovery of what he was.

I have to go with Sephiroth as the clear-cut winner of this battle. I love Link dearly, but the Master Sword doesn't make up for his mortality (and inability to fly).

No matter how impossible the battle may seem, Link always manages to come on top, so my vote is for Link. I haven't played FFVII, but I've played Kingdom Hearts and I've seen what Sephiroth could do and it's pretty scary.

Ganon flies in every 3D Zelda game. There is always a flying nemesis in the LoZ. Link has the Fairy/Hero's Bow, the (Gale) Boomerang, and the Fairy Slingshot. Not to mention the fact that Link is not only the Hero of Time, but also incredibly strong with the Goron Power Bracelet and Power Gauntlets. If nothing else, he could don the Iron Boots and hold his own until Sephiroth realizes that the 14-foot swinging wasn't working.

Yeah, and Link is the Hero of Time. The man destined to deliver Hyrule from evil using the power of the GODS.
c: He studied for (I can't actually remember how long, but a long time anyway) in a desolate casle to understand his being. ... how does being insane help him in battle? Understanding what he is? Please, Link is the Hero of Time; all the skills garnered by his predecessors is passed on to him. I'm afraid that insanity is not a replacement for in-born power.

Link does have Roc's Feather and Roc's cape, which would more than make up for his inability to fly. He has fairies, which make up for his so-called "mortality".

Add to that that Link doesn't fight because he wants to, he fights because he NEEDS to in order to save his homeland, and Link has the clear-cut advantage. Bloody hell, he has access to the Triforce! The very power of the Gods!

How does a genetically-engineered soldier stand up to he who has been chosen by the Gods themselves?

Sephiroth practically is a god. He is no simple genetically-engineered soldier; he is mako incarnate, and Jenova's only true son (as opposed to Genesis and Angeal, who are only half-Jenova). He ignores a casting of meteor from the most powerful spellcaster in the entire FF universe. Flight is not his only advantage. He also has inhuman speed, strength, stamina, intelligence, and charisma, not to mention wisdom. He can reflect power back at enemies with his bare hands. Link can only carry one fairy at a time, at least in all the LoZ games I've played (I haven't played all of them, so I don't know if that has changed). How will that help when the One-Winged Angel kills him twice in a row because he's pissed off?

And as for insanity, have you ever seen a fat cat get angry? They bring the fluidity of motion that a cat naturally has, plus about 15 extra pounds and a berserker rage. Imagine that in a highly trained, highly skilled soldier.

In the end, I suppose it comes down to personal preference. I prefer FF to LoZ (I love both series, but FF is just more fun for me and, I guess, easier for me to take seriously), and (I would assume) you prefer LoZ to FF. we each see our preferred hero (or villain, in my case) as better than the other.
