I went through a short but pretty intense depression period last year.

I am over it now though, and I feel I'm better for it. :)

I dunno really, I've pretty much constantly been on some sort of non prescrition drug or suffering the after effects since I was 16 or so. I did stop everything completely for about 8 months last year and found that I didn't have any energy and didn't want to go out and do things or see people, but then I didn't feel bad as such, just a sort of flat plane of nothing. Having said that your brain takes a long time to re balance itself after coming off long term opiate abuse, so it might just have been the after effects of coming off a heroin substitute. Anyways, my answer is probably not.

Nope. Sure I have times when I am a little down, but never depressed.

this got me wondering, how many people have had depression on the forums? It would seem from the replies on the thread that there was alot, but I thought that I would make a thread to see.

I have never been depressed but some one close to me is and they are on prozac, which seems to work ok for them, but I think that they have a chemical imbalance.
Personally I think depression is way over diagnosed. Such are the problems of trying to assign medical diagnostic criterion for something that has not outward signs, unlike physical illness. Add to that the subjectiveness of the criterion in the first place, depression diagnosis aren't exactly accurate.

Not that I am saying that depression doesn't exist, it certainly does. It just seems that any time someone says the word unhappy they are depressed.

Also, depression is a chemical imbalance. Serotonin, dopamine and various other hormones are controlled by the various type of anti=depression medication.

Used to have clinical depression, took antidepressants for a couple years, but they didn't do anything. Then I stopped for a couple years and it went away on its own. Funny how that works.

I think anti depressants can work in cases in which people seem to be depressed for almost no reason at all. According to my mom, my dad was depressed when his mother died and stayed that way for over thirty years. He got on prozac and became a different person almost over night. People that have real everyday reasons for depression like a recent loss, debilitating physical pain, or some other mental problem often seem to get worse on anti depressants. And then coming off of anti depressants is a nightmare for everyone nearby. The other problem is alcoholism which dad seems to have stepped up a lot with his pills. My parents considered putting me on them years ago, but thinking that I really did hate my life and the fact that my insurance was about to run out, we decided against it.

I am not 'depressed', but I always(as in; every waking second) feel sadness. I've learnt to deal with it. I still feel it, but I'm happier than most people, without suppressing it. I just see it as covering the entire spectrum. I feel empty and bleak when the sadness is absent.

Diagnosed with clinical depression 14-15 years ago (I believe that this year will be year 15, but without checking paperwork I can't swear to it). That would have been when I was in my early 20s.

Been through many kinds of therapy and on many kinds of medication. it isn't curable, just need to try and find a way to live with it.

Over the years my memory has been damaged, some old school friends tried to contact me but I had to cut them off because they are total strangers. I have been hallucinating (scary), having panic attacks and generally going downhill the last year or so which has put me on much stronger medication.

It is difficult to deal with. It is absolutely a mental health problem for me and I hate the stigma around it. Was recently thought of as a potential risk of actually being schizophrenic and am considered by my consultant psychiatrist to be both a danger to myself and others.

All this is different from those who might become depressed due to (for example) bereavement, bullying, money worries etc. Those are just as legitimate but I know that there is light at the end of the tunnel for you guys.

Just so everybody knows, the number one symptom of being depressed is that you're an asshole.
Wait what the FUCK

Most of the time person being depressed doesnt want to be depressed and cant control it.

For example mine is tertiary which i get it from others in my family, its chemicals in the brain not being matched propley.

i cant control that.

Other times its external influence.

Now this is obvisly flamebait and i feel stupid responding to it but it just pisses me off.

I was for quite a while...but no one ever thought to get me a doctor haha
I've gotten out of it, so I guess it wasn't medically serious

I had it really bad from the time I as six until about half a year ago. It still lingers, and is starting to pop out because of my job. I didn't know until a year ago that it was depression. I was depressed, the emotion, when I was a little kid, quiet, sitting in the corner, wanting to be left alone, all that, but I'd gotten "better" (comparatively speaking) since high school and didn't feel sad.

My personality has been made trying to rationalize the depression. It was alienating, and now that I'm (for the most part) past it, I'm trying to relearn social forms and trying to make up for lost time.

I took therapy to get through it. No meds, didn't change my diet, and the only exercise I got was archery. Therapy worked wonders. Well, I thought so, now I'm feeling like I should go back...

I'm not trolling. All the members of my family (and their friends) had no idea that they were depressed until they went to the doctor. When they got on anti depressants, they didn't notice a change at all. Everyone else around them did. The unifying factor is that they were treating everyone like crap, and on meds, they weren't. Many of the people you've met in life who were jerks probably were also depressed. Sorry to shake your genuine belief in the existence of "bad people," but for the most part it's a medical problem.

I am no longer depressed, and at the time I chose to not take any medication.
I can say I overcame it myself (with some help)

I laughed seeing this under "How do you want to die" in the hot topics.
I've never been depressed though...really sad, but never for extended periods of time. It's hard to knock me down for a long period of time.
