I hate any derail "theme" you could possibly come up with. Hate.

In general, though, I like derails because they encourage a discussion going in a new direction, or take the edge off when one gets too heated. Unless they devolve into the previously aforementioned themes, in which case I just have to block a shit ton of annoying image macros and try to injure one or more participants with my mind.
