I've seen a lot of people saying that they're excited about the auction house because they're going to make money off it but I've not actually seen anyone who says that they are going to spend any.

Has anyone made any real money? If so how much?

I personally think it's doomed to fail. As people level up there will be more powerful items on the market which will drive prices down to the point where it won't be worth people's time to sell anything anymore.

The market will be flooded by items from the general population and from people forced to farm items.

Prices will crash and the market will be all but useless. That's what I see.
Unless Blizz decide to tweak the droprates as the items go to the AH. What happened with that info that surfaced that had something to that effect?

But other than that, I actually think the AH is a great idea. ...for Blizzard. I can't comment on its relationship with the players.

Even so, a chinese prison,an internet connection and a ton of inmates farming items will lead to the market being flooded, or at least I could see that happening.
Still, I don't see Blizzard suffering a lot over that. However, I would so love to see them have a Rust Storm of some description to clean up some of the mess. There would be so much whining for and against it. It would be so beautiful.

EDIT Probably just enough to cover the costs of the authenticator that they bought to access the store.
I got four authenticators with my Diablo 3 purchase for free from game (one for each copy I bought from them). There's also a free authenticator for iPhone and Android (and perhaps Windows phones too).

But yeah, I get what you're saying.

I agree Blizzard won't suffer but the average player probably won't be able to make more than a few dollars over a few years if it does get flooded.
Hence why I didn't want to comment on that. But the authenticator brings up another important thing related to the RMAH - account hijacking and the threat of it. It's way more lucrative now to target accounts, and so the danger to everybody is so much greater. So yes, there is some increase in payoff for playing D3, however, the risk is even greater.

But again, Blizzard aren't terribly affected by that. They still get money. If I have to say one thing about the RMAH, it's this

It's not "Chinese prison", it's D3, and it's not "inmates", it's D3 players. Blizzard are guys in charge, of course.

I've made about £20, which is half way to recovering the cost of the game. Or maybe I'd need £30 more if you count the authenticator.

But yeah, I agree the economy won't last for long. There's a hefty gold sink in with the new patch (repair bills), but no gear sink. You buy an item, you use it for a while, you find an upgrade. At this point your old item doesn't disappear, and you can sell it on again. Anything that's a decent bit of gear (i.e. with a good roll of stats) isn't going to the vendor. Eventually there'll be top quality gear in abundance and nobody will be willing to pay real money for it.

Still, that's not happened yet, and there are people paying cash for seemingly mundane items.

I usually just put stuff on the gold auction house and I've had a fair amount success through that. As for the Real money auction house, I've put stuff on it but no one ever buys it sadly but I will continue since even making a buck is somewhat worth while. I will never spend real money on an item though I think its a waste of money and kinda defeats the purpose of playing the game.
