So, I was watching the latest Doomsday Arcade and reading the comments section, which made me wonder: Did you guys like Alyx Vance? Personally, she's high on the list of my favorite characters of all time. What did you think?

Well, she was pretty well-rounded, if unable to think up a good pun. Not my favourite, but a decent one nontheless.

you mean Lance Vance?
"Your parents called Lance Vance? Poor bastard!"
I hope you were referring to Vice City there.

OT: Any other day I'd say no but today I'm gonna go ahead and just say...no.

I never really got attached to her. I'll admit she's a good character but I never really found myself caring about her. So since there's no middle ground, I guess that makes me a "no" by default.

I like her but she is completely unnessary in Half Life 2. Sure, she is sorta pretty and I wish my fiance looked like that but as Gordon doesn't speak she is rather a useless extra. I just don't see Half Life needing a "love interest" as they already have a good storyline without it.
I disagree, I think it makes the game feel more human in all. Something that's sorely needed when the main character doesn't speak and the whole world is trying to shoot you.

I didn't think much of her portrayal in the show, but as for the original character...

Well, y'know how nerds the world over go all sweaty for Lara Croft? Yeah, it's kinda like that.

She had character depth, not like most of the characters they had in games these days (She even had more character than Gordon Freeman!(You know it to be true)). I respect Valve for that, along with many other things.

Yea, I liked her in general. Wouldn't say she's one of the greatest, but a strong character, for sure.

She was all right. It's annoying when people vilify her as some kind of amazing feat of game design though.

Very much so.

She is probably one of the few female video game characters these days that actually has redeeming qualities and aren't just there to serve as eye candy.

Nah she was fairly flat and had short hair, no cleavage Oh wait you mean character wise...

No. She was annoying at best. There has never been any character I especially liked unless they were badass like the Jackal from FC2.

You do not know how many times I have rewatched her getting a stun baton lodged in her face. *Watches again* Take that you annoying jerkwad! I really like how they managed to downplay how annoying she was.

Yes, the game did kind of force Alyx upon you as the "romantic interest" character, when frankly I had no idea who the hell she was.
Plus there is the age difference. I am not quite sure, but Freeman looks to be at least in his 40s, while Alyx may in fact still be a minor. (Although that is only on the box. Due to the lack of cutscenes, reflective surfaces, or legs when you look down there is no in game evidence that Freeman is anything more than disembodied hands.) Also, was I the only one who was bothered by the fact that her father is black (And reminds me of an old person about to drift off into an amusing anecdote) she is distinctly not black at all?

To much "grrl power!!!!11!1111!" in her personality to make her likable, and her constant sucking up to the player (as The One Free Man) doesn't compensate for this at all. I like that she wasn't some overly sexualized big-breasted bimbo (and other such generic flattery with respect to gender equality), but there's being ordinary, and then there's in your face with constant reminders that she's not, and she repeats, not the token tits in the game. They didn't just beat this dead horse, they resuscitated it, bred it with a fine stud, took it's offspring and proceeded to beat them all do death.

The short of it is she'd have been much better (in my humblest of opinions) if the devs hadn't gone so far out of their way to design her to be an asexual joyless stereotype of feminist independence.
