Personally i think it is an above average shooter, and an incredible RPG. One of the few games that made me think about the choices i made, and care about characters within it. All the stuff that was streamlined was in my opinion the stuff that needed to be. Why have a massive choice of armor and weaponry, when really they're all the same? People complained there was less customization in ME2, but to me it felt like more, since having different armor and weaponry actually made a difference this time around. The characters were better more fleshed out, and more importantly they were actually like-able. All the quests were fun, and it never felt like a grind at any point to me. Indeed, I'm hard pressed to find any flaws in it whatsoever.

It is very possibly my favorite game ever, and if not then very close to it. Outmatches mass effect 1 (Which i also love) in every respect.

This. I though it was an awesome shooter with a great story. But it is funny how it pretends to be a RPG.
Yeah, there's absolutely no character building to it, except for the linear upgrade system which is functional, gives me a reason to do side quests at least.

Then again, I'd still rather have it the way it was in ME2, rather than the really clunky inventory and somewhat pointless skill trees in the first game. Wish BioWare fixed those problems, rather than remove them altogether. Seems to be a pattern with them.
Yeah. I understand people who say Mass Effect 2 isn't an RPG. I just don't understand the people who say it isn't an RPG compared to the first game. Just because there are more blocks to fill doesn't make it deeper. The difference from block to block in Mass Effect were just so incremental.

The inventory system was just full of reskins with clear-cut choices of what the better option is (given that two choices are of the same level). The only time where you really had to decide which armor or weapon to use was better (due to advantages/drawbacks of one compared to the other) was whether to wear Colossus Armor (more damage resistance) or Predator L/M/H Armor (more shields and tech/biotic resistance). Mass Effect 2 makes it so that you will want to use different guns in different situations, as each has its own strength and weakness.

Its brilliant.

People keep criticising it for not being enough of a (stats-based) RPG, which only leads me to question why the hell they were playing Mass Effect in the first place. I can't really take anyone seriously who tries to reference the first game as being deep when it comes to stats.

Its an RPG because of the conversations and choices.

Loved it, favorite game of 2010, possibly all time. It just had everything I wanted in a game, and it actually made me feel epic. Something few games do nowadays.

Short story yes with a but. Cutting the slow bits out of ME1 (long uneventful corridors, elevators, the Mako) and turning the first person shooting element into a Gears of War style chest high wall hugging clone made the game more exciting but feel less important. ME2 would have fared far worse if, like DA2, it was launching a new protagonist and jumping as far afield.

Where is the middle option? I thought it was alright, not amazing, but not terrible. The story was alright, and the characters were an improvement on the original. However it became less like an rpg and more like a shooter, which is somewhat of a bad thing when you don't particularly love shooters in the first place.

Also, I'm not really holding it against just Mass Effect 2. I didn't think the original Mass Effect was that amazing either. That was more of a shooter than an rpg too, really.

One of my all-time favourite games. Not a perfect game, but the improved gameplay and the awesome story really sealed the deal for me. Bring on ME3!

Love it. Played through it 4-5 times. One of the few games I bothered to get all the achievements for.

I thought they took a couple steps forward in some directions, and was pushed down the stairs in other directions.

Yep, it indeed was a great game. The characters were well-defined and well written without relying too much on the cliche rulebook, though some fans (as said previously) found that a number were less likeable than those in the 1st ME. I'd chalk that up to personal taste more than anything, but still... great game.

I just really wish the 3 merc groups didn't feel the need to appear in every damn non-geth, non-collector combat mission. That still frustrates me.
C'mon, LS. They're the PMCs of the ME Universe; of course the hodge-podge missions are gonna be rife them 'em. That would be like a modern-era shooter devoid of its expected number of mercs, bandits, and terrorists running around in-game. :p

Yes, I liked it.
However, there were two things I liked better in the original.

- ME was a real RPG/TPS, ME2 is a TPS with only the fading shadow of an RPG.

- You could actually run around on the planets you had to mine in ME, the mining system in ME2 is simply mind numbing.

I hope they fix these in ME3.

Some more cosmetic customization would have been nice, but it certainly wasnt a deal breaker. The only thing that got to me was the box art for the standard edition.
That, Weapon customization (like in the first game) and a more coherent story would have made it the best game of all time.
As it stands it is only just a superb game.

Because with the option to greatly modify stats and adapt weaponry, you choose the evolution of the combat-based side of your character. Conversational choices are for the story, stat-(and weapon-)based choices are for the gameplay. Get it?

I loved both, and the lack of different armor types was good IMO. The first one had me spending a long ass time just switching armors on party members and it got to be tedious.

To be perfectly honest...BioWare is yet to release a game i really do not like. Sure they have their issues, some minor, some bigger, some less r more annoying but this kind of thing is something i am willing to forgive if the overall impression is that good.

Just like with DA2 i could spend hour on pointing ME2 flaws or design ideas i do not fully agree with as a gamer. But both those titles were fully worth the money i spent on them, especially int he age where majority of productions is limited to 6-10 hours of gameplay when you are really pushing it for every single secret/achievement.

40-50+ hours of storyline based gameplay gets a thumbs up from me.

Fantastic game, should've kept some semblance of an inventory system and maybe a few more skills, could just be me picking nits.

Main plot isn't that great compared to the first, felt like it was stalling for time by adding Collectors and Harbinger instead of figuring out ways to stop the Reapers. Still great game, nearly the best of 2010 (outshined by Bayonetta).

I agree. ME, itself, was barely a RPG. Which is why the backlash from ME to ME2 wasn't nearly as severe as the backlash from DA:O to DA2.

easily one of the best games ive ever played. and i love that (imo) they fixed EVERY issue with ME1. everything i didnt like about the first game was either terminated or revamped in the second.

i hope ME3 is even better :D
