No how can you get attached to something that just have a heart painted on the side, it's a box!
Yeah, just because a pair of tits are drawn on your bedroom window doesn't make you want to jack off onto it; and if it does, then you got some problems you pervert.

You can guess that there were no feelings on my end towards the companion cube. All i saw it as was another object for me to use to meet the main objective- to get thru to the next room and destroy GLaDOS.

Like others have said, I never actually felt sorry for the cube because there was no reason to do so.

The cube itself is a soulless hunk of plastic no different than any other cube found in the game aside from having some hearts scrawled on it. Had you simply gone through the level without Glados saying a word, nobody would hesitate to dispose of the cube. The cube was not some unique creature that you destroyed. It was an easily replicated object, as shown by it's presence in the last screen in the game.

However, Glados constantly tries to suggest that there is some kind of bond between you and the cube. She thinks that the player will immediately attach them self to lifeless cube, just because she says that they should. It shows her limited understanding of how humans really work, leading to her surprise when players don't hesitate to lob the cube into the firey pit. Just because she says you should feel attached to the cube doesn't mean you will. There has to be a reason for you to like a character. No story can expect you to like a character just because you are told to do so. This is why I always enjoyed the humor behind the companion cube. Not only is it a funny part of the game, but I also see it as a mockery of poor story telling.

Of course a lot of player apparently became attached to the cube so I'm not sure what to think of that. All I know is that whatever humor I originally associated with the cube is now long gone after every joke about it was driven into the ground.

Ok I'm a guy but I felt sorry for the Comp. Cube because after being incinerated he made it to your party...You just toss it/him in and it/he still loves you enough to go and come to your party--he probably had the cake inside of him which is why you had to incinerate him!

For some odd reason, on my first go playing through Portal, GLaDOS missed some of her lines for some reason. I'm not sure why that was (probably some glitch), but as a result I didn't even realize that that thing was the companion cube until I got to the incinerator.

I was just left feeling perplexed as to what the big deal was.

I felt sorry for it, but then I'm the type of person who feels sorry for Tom from Tom and Jerry when he gets hit over the head with a frying pan or something. >_<

No. That thing scared the shit out of me. With Glados(Gladys? IDK) saying how it won't threaton you to stab you in the back, I was certain that the thing would ACTUALLY grow arms and stab me in back. That, and I don't trust something that's pink and has a heart on it. Call me paranoid but something made to look that cute and harmless just HAS to be about to eat your face off. So I threw it in the furnace. And it died. (Maybe?)

It wasn't suposed to be a sad thing. You know how in most comedys you have the guy that does unexpected/crazy/silly things and another guy that reacts like a regular person. Well, in portal you take the part of the regular person, and GLaDOS is the unexpected/crazy/silly person, saying things like you where supposed to feel sad for the cube is unexpected/crazy/silly.

I did felt kinda sorry for the people who hided in the walls now and then. But that's different. I felt sorry for the idea of someone that was driven that crazy, lonely and had to endure in that hostile environment with little or no explanations, it's very different than a piece of metal being burned.

I also felt kinda sorry for the curious core i had to incinerate near the end, but he had somewhat of an intelligence.

I actually legitimately felt bad for it. I don't know, I thought it was really funny how they gave me a block with hearts on it. It was still more painful to throw GLaDOS's personality cores into the furnace.

Honestly, no. I only had it for one level, but it did make me a little bit sorry for euthanizing it. I had no problems killing civilians in Prototype or Little Sisters in Bioshock however. But the saddest parting was probably when I accidentally threw away my best gun in Borderlands. That was my most heart wrenching moment in all of gaming.
