"Use the Search Bar"

As I see it, this phrase is becoming a bit of a problem.

More and more lately I am seeing that it has become common practice to put: "Search Bar Approved," or "Yes, I used the search bar," or some other derivative, as a form of disclaimer. This is because if the thread creator does not have this kind of message in their post somewhere, The first few posts will inevitably say: "Use the Search Bar."

This, I believe, is an OK practice if it can be proven that there was a very similar, if not identical, thread made in the recent past (say, 3 or 4 months). This has happened to me, and I graciously accepted that I did not, in fact, do a thorough search. Unfortunately I have seen far too many people post "Use the Search Bar" simply because they think something similar has been done. Even worse is when the OP then proves that they did in fact use the search bar, and the accuser cannot prove the existence of a similar thread.

You may see that I have kept a civil tone throughout this post. This is because I do not wish to cause controversy; all I want is for people to get their facts straight. If you think the OP hasn't done a search, do one yourself, see if you can easily get a similar page to come up. If you can, link the OP to it, and advise them on how to do a more thorough search.

So please, please don't come down on authors so hard unless it is a very obvious repeat thread, not just because you have an inkling that it might just have been done before.

TL;DR version:
People overuse "Use the Search Bar," even without having their facts straight.

To add an element of discussion to this thread, I pose the question: Do you see Search Bar Nazi's as a nuisance? Do you think they're a good thing? Are you indifferent?

I'm fine with them.
If having them around prevents us from having fifty identical threads in the same day, that's wonderful.

I would like if they posted links to the existing threads, though.
That's what I did for a while.

Look, we need them. Without them we would have so many repeat threads. All they need is to be told every once and awhile that they need to calm down.

Actually I did. The first 2 are 404'd and the 3rd is just asking if you are one of these people. Beyond that it goes into completely irrelevant topics.

The only time I'm un-OK with that phrase is when it's used unnecessarily. Otherwise, wutevs

I find it somewhat annoying, but people who are grammar nazi annoy me more. More so if they complain about grammar when it's about a different writing style (like gonzo).

That's pretty much exactly the point I was trying to make. Some people are very helpful when it comes to the search bar, but when the person that says it can't prove that the OP has done anything wrong; that's when it bothers me.

Still, just because your OP might be slightly different doesn't mean that your sentiment hasn't already been adequately answered. That's like saying, "what's your zombipocalypse survival plan?" and "What would you do in a zombiepocalypse" threads are both necessary.

OK, I can see how you came to that conclusion, but your examples are both asking for the same answer. What I am asking for is more akin to the relationship between "What would you do in the zombiepocalypse?" and "Do you like zombiepocalypse games?" (Just examples). But I will take your point on board, I realise the differences are subtle, sorry...

And LordCuthberton, I'm sorry I didn't catch the sarcasm, text is not great for conveying sarcasm... ;)

People are gonna do repeat threads anyway. People who say, "Use the search bar" or "Report and move on" are just as annoying as the people they are talking to.

I'm not that bothered. If it is a subject that I have commented on before, then I won't comment again.

It's worthless to post "use the search bar" and I think those posts should be deleted.
The simple reason is that ignoring the thread works a lot better, and that "search" or "repeat" is just a pathetic way to say "post count +1".

I don't mind it if its legitimate. But I hate when its said with such attitude and disdain. Its as if it personally offends people to see repeated posts. Just be nice about it.

I think "use the search bar" serves a worthwhile purpose if it helps cut down on repeat topics. Sometimes people might not realise that a topic has been done within the past few days or weeks when things can disappear off the first page within a couple of hours. As long as it's not overused or tending towards fascism, I can happily see it as useful guidance.

What does really annoy me, though, is the current habit of writing "search bar approved" at the beginning of every topic... particularly when I know I've posted in a similar topic recently, so they're obviously just saying it in the hope that others don't bother to check. Really, why would anyone need to put that in their post? It's hardly the worst thing in the world to be told that your topic is similar to one that's already been done, why the paranoia?

I dunno, that's probably just me.
