I have been listening to Mastodon's Crack the Skye concept album which details among other things Rasputin, I looked him up as I had seen references to him before and found out some pretty crazy stuff. For one the man survived being shot, poisoned, and drowned only to turn up dead from hypothermia. Although there are many different story's about him and how he was mystical that is one I found to be quite interesting. I have been thinking about this a lot lately, despite being skeptic of mysticism. So now I ask the community of the Escapist what they think of him. If you want to learn more look him up, it's quite fascinating (though strange).

He was a nutcase, and if most people are nutcases then no, he is not at all different. And concerning his ability to survive being spd'd, yes, that was luck.

There was something odd about the guy, though he could just have been incredibly lucky, guess his luck ran out.

I fucking love Rasputin. He's my hero. Well, maybe not. But I think he sounds like a badass and the stories about him are pretty cool.

I personally think that if there is ever going to be a zombie outbreak, Rasputin would be the leader of them. I can't think of anyone better to lead a zombie horde.

Well, you must have somekind of unnatural powers to survive those murder attempts. Though he was a nasty man with an even nastier beard.

He is, as cracked.com puts it, "The patron saint of dying hard." That just reeks of awesomeness.

I bought that album today!

Anyway, I reckon he's some sort of wizard.
Such a great album, am I right?
Yeah I personally think he was lucky but I think there may be a little more to it than that...
I sorta left that out of my post.

He's like a 20th century jesus! With a massive dong. People like him just crop up in time, mess people about then die in a spectacular way to secure their legendary status.

Completely insane. So insane in fact that he didn't even know when to die like a normal person. And I wouldn't call him holy or evil, just not anywhere near his right mind. He was also weak-minded and easily swayed down paths most people would think twice about.

Not sure wether or not he had a positive or negative influence during his life, or if he was just a scapegoat/ target for the Russian Orthodox Church who if not him, could have just as easily been someone else.

But whatever the case, whatever he was, it was not mystical. Course the power of belief can be mystifying. Just ask the witches of Salem.

Rasputin is so manly he has multiple cocks (on display in a number of museums). Also, he had a daughter named Maria who attested to a more positive depiction of his character.

Anyways, he's an amazingly legendary character in Russia. You can't make up something like him.

He already has. Ever played the half-life 2 level Ravenholm? The Priest guy is named Grigori, which is Rasputins' first name. Also If you ever use him in Garry's mod You'll find he has an enormous amount of health (though that's probably so he doesn't get killed by the zombies and leave you trapped).

He did seem to know the Tsar's (Nicolas II is memory serves right) son, Alexei, suffered from haemophilia which was a closely guarded secret. He also 'seemed' by doctors accounts to some what stem internal bleeds said son suffered when knocked etc. Undoubtedly he was completely insane, but there are alot of coincidences that almost make me want to shift into the 'maybe' camp.

OT: Voted no.

Here's where my paying attention to history class pays off.

Grigori Rasputin was a monk who worked alongside Nikolas Romanov II the last Czar of Russia. He became the famous man after 'curing' Nikolas son Alexei of the disease Hemophelia not once but twice. Upon doing so many members of the community grew angry at him and have made several attempts on his life. Rasputin was stabbed , poisoned ,which is being doubted due to a diet he put himself on after the stabbing, being shot four times in the back with a revolver and then being wrapped in a sheet and dumped into a frozen river giving him hypothermia.

As I said though there are many conflicting storys like I heard that Nikolas Romanov II was very thankfull of him, so much so that he lived with them.

It has also been said that Rasputin once said that upon his death the whole Romanov family would be killed and events have shown that to have some truth in it

There are things like that in history :O A swedish king was considered unkillable except by something dear to him, so the legend goes that someone made a bullet out of one of his buttons on his favourite suit and shoot him in the head with it :O
