Okay, so after the general consensus that Duke Nukem Forever is one massive 12-year in the making disappointment, many threads have appeared on this site, and on one of these threads, me and another user of the Escapist got into a small debate about what was a good replacement.

After passing through several other options, we settled on a rather good replacement.

Quake 4!

Seriously, this game has everything people seem to want from Duke Nukem Forever

1)No two-weapon limit - You get nine weapon slots. Huzzah
2) Campness - It's a shameless story about space marines invading the hoogey-bloogey aliens of the Gamma Delta system. And they all wear power armour and are bad-asses.
3) Over the Top action - It's a invasion of a Alien planet, by Space Marines!
4) Cool but Impractical weapons - You get a lighting gun! And a gun which fires homing needles!
5) Camp Dialouge and Characters - They're all generic characters, saying generic lines, all in a tounge-in-cheek-manner. Awesome, right?
6) Coolness for the hell of it - The player character get's turned into a mega-cyborg!
7) Decent Graphic - Okay, so the game doesn't have amazing graphics, but they ain't bad for a game which came out in six years ago
8) It's really cheap Only a fiver from Amazon! Sign me up.

So what do you think Escapist? Did we come to a good decision?

[small]Please not that this was not a paid commercial by Raven Software the games developer, or Activision the games publisher.[/small]

I'll put quake 4 on my "to get because I'm buying old games for rockbottom prices" list. I've already gotten so many other titles recently.

But I'm unfamiliar with the quake franchise, is the focus of 4 on singleplayer or multiplayer? Online or offline if multiplayer? The only thing that stops me when I buy old games en masse is when the focus is online multiplayer, and then only if it's online community is near nonexistent.

I keep meaning to get this, it's the only Quake game I don't have

I believe Quake 3 was all multiplayer, the others had both single and multiplayer.

Not that I disagree that Duke Nukem Forever is extremely generic and mediocre, but Quake 4 has nothing whatsoever to do with Duke Nukem and is a completely different kind of game, why are you even comparing the two?
Duke sold itself on the idea of being a fundamentally old school shooter with modern looks.

Quake 4 is a fundamentally old scool shooter with modern(ish) looks.

At least I think that's where he's coming from, Quake 4 was a great laugh, it wasn't earth shattering at the time but now in the increasingly brown world fighting giant red mecha-spiders from the wheel(?!) of your turbo hover tank sounds like a breath of fresh air.

It's a single player game and (story wise) a direct sequel to Quake 2, although really the sequel part means they just happen to take part in the same universe.

Quake 3 was multiplayer only and Quake takes place in it's own little world...

My recommendation would be Serious Sam 3 when it releases in September

Although Quake 4 is an good modern FPS, Pray 1 is fun to play aswell
