The thing is, typically, as far as modern games being played on consoles or high end pc's, better graphics tend to indicate the level of polish being put into a game. Or at least it was in the past, people typically associated games with better graphics with having decent gameplay because the polish put into one area would indicate it shining in all areas. While this is far from always true, it's just something people have begun to assume.

Graphics aren't all that.
Yes, good graphics are a plus. But if the graphics suck, yet if the gameplay/storyline are still good. The graphics aren't gonna stop from playing it.

Meh im content with medium settings most of the time, and only upgrade when I need to graphics wise (PC user). How ever, graphics do help a bit, as I find it a bit....off putting sometimes when going back to my older games.

The graphics don't matter option isn't valid, graphics (obviously) impact on gameplay so of course they matter. I said they were as important as story and gameplay, although I would of liked the option to say nearly as important :p

I would of also voted for them to not be an excuse for poor gameplay. I feel like most people think that graphics are either everything or nothing; they don't make a game, but they impact on how 'playable' a game is. If Assassin's Creed was exactly the same but with the graphics capability of something like grim fandango the game play wouldn't of been the same, would it?

If the game is based on atmosphere and tension then bad graphics could ruin that. So to a certain degree yes, but they aren't necessary for having fun.

I still play freaking PSX games... The first two Tenchu games were far better than any other ninja games I have played afterwards. But decent graphics are always a nice bonus as long as it also has the story and stability to back it up. I had to turn Mass Effect down a fair bit as the fucking thing kept crashing. Stupid bioware.
However one genre I find they are wasted in is RTS. I never ever zoom in far enough for it to matter and have stated many times that Warhammer: Dark Omen is probably my all time fave RTS and to be honest. It looks like shit [http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/61/WHDO-day.jpg]
Yay! Another Dark Omen fan! It's a bloody awesome game. And graphics wise it looked pretty good back then if I recall correctly. If we really wanted to we could mention Shadow of the Horned Rat. That looks a lot worse.

People say they don't. But most gamers are garanteeded to kick up a fuss if graphics don't meet their expectations.

If the graphics distract from the gameplay, I don't like them.
Likewise, if the graphics are trying to excuse for poor gameplay, I just don't like the whole game.

Here's my opinion with graphics:
If a good game has shit graphics, oh well. It's still a good game.
If a good game has good graphics, rejoice!
If a bad game has good graphics, throw away the piece of trash.
If a bad game has bad graphics, throw away the ugly piece of trash.
I sincerely and heartily agree. Quoth Aragorn: You have my sword.

amazing graphics are good but they don't redeem a terrible game but a game that plays brilliantly and has a good story would redeem it of looking pretty poor...

Well, I like to play games that actually look good, but if I had the choice, I'd take bad graphics with great gameplay and story over great graphics and crap gameplay and story.

I think graphics are very important to a game, but it is also how they are used and applied to the game. My favorite example of this is Okami. That game is not going to look dated for long time video game wise due to the art style it possesses and its use of color and image.
