While graphics are far from the most important piece of a game, ascetic still matters. I rate story, gameplay, and controls (in that order) as the top factors in making a good game, but graphics are a close fourth. If it doesn't look good, less people are going to buy it in this day and age. Just part of the business. And the console hardware (at least the 360 and especially the PS3) have hardly been pushed to their limits. I think we can still make graphical improvements in this console generation before moving into the 8th.

i think they need to get worse, i liked it when looking at a game was like rubbing your eyes whit lollipops and coke instead of shit (not saying graphics of modern technology is shit, but it is pretty brown)

Graphics have no impact over me.
Why just a few minutes ago, I was playing The original Pokemon on the Gameboy color.
I think the real concern is people coming out with more bold and original ideas, and put Graphics on the backburner. (But then again, Great Graphics don't hurt a game at all.)

Realistic doesn't necesarily mean good, so I say no. Games do not need better graphics. The CryEngine is good enough. Too please everybody, they game engines should reach up to it's level and then focus on story, gameplay and such, or at least AI with more brain than a 5 year old.

the problem is with new style graphics is that developers feel that better graphics means more colours like grey and brown

Hi, just joined the forums finally.

Anyway, this isn't the first time this has cropped up. Ever since the very earliest days of gaming with the first releases of some of our favorite hits such as Pacman and Space Invaders we have though that graphics couldn't possibly get any better than they were and that they didn't need to. That was before my time, but I certainly remember the feeling personally when Unreal Tournament 2004 was released.

I guess my point is don't turn better graphics down until you have actually seen them. You may like them. You may love them. You may even sit there drooling at the screen. Who knows.

The level it's at now is fine the some wii games can be low res but then so are some 360 (vampire rain) and ps3 (can't think of any atm) but generally are all good and agreed with a post up above some old nintendo games in full 3d on the wii would be good :)

No, the limits of the ps2 were sufficient enough. I honestly think too much work is going into graphics than the actual gameplay.

My reply to such a question would have to be.

'Do game devs need to stop mincing about and make the damn games already.'

Happy enough with a Dawn of War Dark Crusade level graphics for RTS and Morrowind or Halo level graphics for shooters and RPGs.

Graphics stopped 'needing' to get better some time around 2004 when Far Cry, Doom 3 and Half Life 2 came out.

Since then pretty much all graphical 'improvements' have been nothing more than crappy window dressing or hardware dick waving. They don't add anything to the gameplay, the characters or the immersion of the game, it would be much better if developers put the effort into the game and not another layer of rendering.

No, I mean how much better can they get?
They need to focus more on story, gameplay, and making games less buggy.

I also think that instead of focusing on visuals they need to develope technology so that games stimulate your other senses like feeling, smell, and hearing because I've heard some god awful audio and voice acting in games.

Graphics stop the developers thinking about fun.
End of.
This pretty much sums up my beliefs.

UT2k4's graphics were far superior to the "next gen" UT3 graphics anyway, because they actually new what a colour was, and they also knew what their game was actually about.

Nothing wrong with making a game look good, but if I want something that only looks good, I'll go watch a film.
