Poll: Do prefer western or eastern animation?

I like Old realistic style of eastern animation. Akira, Princess Monoke, etc etc.
And I like the general style of Wastern but realistic western is still close to my heart. shame most of the stories in Western are plain shit...

But when it comes to drawing, realistic western wins in style. But realistic eastern works for me now and then.

I do like some western cartoons like Invader Zim and Futurama, but western animation is missing one very important thing: Cuteness.

I really love the detail in Japanese animation and I really don't care if a character's lips are in perfect sync with the words. So yeah, Eastern animation gets my vote.

Sure, a lot of it is shit. Most of the cartoons imported from the United States are shit, although those pretentious, modern Canadian/French cartoons are often as shitty as the USA stuff.

But in my eyes, pretty much all anime is absolute shit.

What I like about Eastern is the it's usually so foreign and weird to me that I can really escape into the show's insanity. I like a lot of more mature western shows (South Park, Futurama, Simpsons before season eight, Family Guy before it was canceled) for the way they work as both high and low brow. Ie having political satire and dick jokes.

In terms of products available, I'd definitely go with eastern animation any day. Western animation seems to operate on only a few tangents ("shows for kids", "shows mostly/also for kids", "politically slanted sitcoms"), while Animé runs the gamut genrewise and thematically.

As for the art styles, I have a preference for slightly "western" and lowkey looking shows like most of Death Note and Monster (arguably elements of Spice & Wolf as well). I don't mind the eastern style at all though, as my obvious favourite should tell.

I love my Japanimation (Yes I did just say that) but I also like my Western Animation. There are alot of gems on both sides, but considering how things are around here, people aren't going to remember Death Note as much as they are going to remember The Iron Giant. Same thing with Spirited Away and Toy Story. In my opinion, Anime needs to make a much stronger impact if it wants to be remembered everywhere. We may retain it, but we are a minority, while the majority remembers Disney, and while remembering Disney is ALWAYS a good thing, we all know there are things in Anime we want to remember to. Dragonball, Death Note, Howls Moving Castle, Digimon, Spirited Away, and many other greats of Anime are liked in the west, but we are the minority. Something has to be done to make it so that people recognise it.

Personally, I would say having Channel 4 in the UK show Death Note. That will alert people, and honestly, be fucking cool.

I don't like the eastern anime art style at all, plus all (exept for the old pokemon one. Yay!) the ones I've been forced to watch bits of weren't great either, because all the characters pissed me off something awful.

Spongebob is the perfect example; stupid, pointless, idiotic.

Dude uncool man. Unless of course your talking about everything made after the 3rd season in which I totally agree.

Well the first little while at least had originality and creativity going for it, but it very quickly lost that and fell into a formulaic waste of existence. Very, very quickly. But point being, Spongebob has no meaning, even back when it was entertaining. Shows like Full Metal Alchemist or Death Note, on the other hand, are rife with depth, presenting interesting characters, epic stories, and plenty of philosophical and ethical subjects. That's something little American animation can claim, let alone Spongebob.

Well Full Metal Alchemist is awesome but, Spongebob had meaning just not to adults. Take the "Pizza Delivery" Episode even though Squidward demonstrates hating Spongebob the entire episode at the end he stands up for him. Give me any episode prior to the 3rd season and there's a meaning there.

Anyway after the movie the executive producer Stephen Hillenburg stopped making them or stopped making sure they were any good so if started watching the series late you'd think the series sucks.

I prefer Anime over Western animation nowadays, but I do love alot of cartoons pre-2000...
