And here comes the third reason: if they stop using discs, hundred of thousands of people will get fired
In the end, that's a poor argument. Should we stunt technological development because people might have to look for new jobs?
I hope so, my boyrfriend would lose his job. He works for EB.

i seriously think that everything of such nature will be gone in the near future. i never buy/use CD's anymore except in the car (and ipod synchronisation will make that irrelevant soon), even movies and such can be simply downloaded nowadays. discs really don't have a future, and we never use them anymore in my home anyway

Technology will always move on, and I've little doubt that discs are little more than yet another rung on the ladder.

It's probably already been mentioned that the copy protection methods associated with discs provided very little in the way of actual security. Some bored hackers dig into the software and remove the part that checks the hardware: done.

What's probably going to happen is that any software worth selling is going to be distributed over a network to be indirectly referenced by a dumb terminal because piracy has absolutely crippled the industry. The grid is one such possible implementation. Every dollar lost to piracy will go into solutions like this.

I don't know, being able to download games is great, it saves hassle with losing discs and scratches corrupting the disc, but just having an actual physical game in front of you is awesome, waiting in a queue until midnight and getting a copy of a game before the others is fun, the whole night is fun, it's what makes gaming fun for everyone!!!!!

Disks won't go away any time soon. Most people (as in most lay people, not most gamer/computer nerds) still want to have something physical to own. Downloading things is all well and good, but I know that everything I download off the internet, I immediately back up onto a disk. People like being able to hold something and say "I own this." That feeling won't go away for a while.

I know that people use ipods and such for listening to music. But I have three working CD players, one of them older than I am, and I have two not working ipods, both of which crapped out right after their warranties expired conveniently. Call me old fashioned but I would rather pay $20 for a CD player that will last for most of my lifetime than pay $200 for an ipod that wears out after a couple of years.

Many people I speak to seem to think that digital distribution will make the disc outdated within the next ten years... the trouble is that if people think that, it will most likely become true because those same people will be choosing digital methods instead of discs.

As a PC gamer I see discs as more of a hassle than anything else. They take up space, make clutter and are ultimately useless except as a constant annoyance when the app demands the disc be inserted into the drive if I want to play the game. Why not just eliminate that measure entirely so I can bury these discs in storage somewhere? Harassing those who have legitimately purchased the discs does little to thwart piracy.
