I know some people love playing through Skyrim again, or fucking around in GTA after the story line.

I honestly can't do this. I tried it in Skyrim but I found it too hassle. Why would I choose a different route when I know how many benefits there are in my old profile? Even in Saint's Row 4, when I finished the story, the game was dead to me. I guess my attention span is just too low.

I just progress to a point in the story I know I can come back to at any time and then do everything else, finishing the story last. I never got round to finishing Skyrim's story because everything else was so awfully boring, though.
I do enjoy replaying some games though, that I particularly enjoyed or just to 100% / Platnium them.

There's a couple of reasons why restarting a game is fun:

Different choices made in the story which alter it.
Choosing a different class or playstyle.
Some games have a randomized aspect to it, no playthrough is the same.
The game is so good you want to experience it again.
Restarting your character because you fucked it up somehow.
Missed achievements/secret stuff.

I do that more as a matter of course now, because a lot of recent games have had lacklustre storylines and more interesting pursuits in the form of sidequests and minigames. That should change, because a good story should be the backbone of a game.

In most games when the story is done I lose incentive to keep playing. Some games dont really need a story to hold them together and give purpose though and for these I will keep playing until I get bored.

I rarely replay games much anymore simply because I have more than I could possibly ever finish anyway.

Depend on the game and how much I wantto "complete" it.

I choose to carry on games like Infinite Space (has different path to choose in the story), Dragon Quest 9 and Borderlands 2 and Pre sequel etc but when it come to Monster Hunter 4, Child of Light I couldn't be bother (well for MH case, I got put off how hard it became on High rank so I know I won't face well in G rank).

Oops. DA games are by far my most replayed game. But I also replay stuff like Fallout and Skyrim like crazy too. I think for me it ultimately depends on if the game has divergent storylines or play styles that you can do which make the experience different each time. If the single player/story is linear and there's really only one ending, I'm less inclined to replay it unless it 's an old favorite like N64 games because I'm feeling nostalgic.

It depends on the game, to be fair. Dark Souls and all it's spiritual brothers and sisters are all about how you build you character in terms of clothes, weapons and stats. There are so many combinations, and so many unique experiences to be had for each playthrough. Plus I use them as sort of 'Podcast Games' after my first playthrough. It's nice to make progress through a place you know off by heart and build up a character with some background noise.

And I'm generally a pretty big fan of games that do interesting stuff with NG+ modes, like Chrono Trigger and it's 12 or so endings you can only really get in NG+, Final Fantasy Type-0 and the extra story stuff, and John Cena's Sexy High School Adventure's everything(look it up people).

Did that with Borderlands 2 with all of the different character classes. When stuff with other games gets boring or tiring, I just hop on my Salvador "Godzooka" build and just go ape-shit, monkey nuts insane until I leave enough craters, bodies and fried mechanical parts where I can go back to those other games cackling my crazy lil head off.

Oh yes! If I enjoy a game I sometimes play it a dozen more times afterwards.

However, once I finish the story, I usually consider that playthrough done, and I won't play any more addition content until a next playthrough.

I really don't find much replay value in games, because your character build rarely makes that much of a difference. I mean yes, hitting someone with a sword vs using spells, or being a soldier vs a vanguard or yadda yadda yadda. But the character doesn't really change the story.

No matter if your a Nord warrior or a Khajiit thief, chances are good the StormCloaks and the Empire will still be a war, you'll still need to kill bandits in towers, and you'll still need to kill giants for Thanes and you'll have to grind Smithing and Enchanting all over again

Or no matter what Shepard you are, you're still gonna fight Saren, the Collectors, The Reapers. You'll still spend way too long on the planet scanning mechanics in ME2 or endlessly searching every planet in ME1 for the last Asari token or the Citadel for the last Keeper to scan. And running across the galaxy doing the same boring squadmate side missions and responding to Aria in the exact same way each time.

Or even Dark Souls where the character class can seriously change your playing style; what are the odds you still have to go to Blight Town or fight fuck-off big skeleton daemon knights? Or that you'll die alot?

I get that some people can put up with the grind, but I seriously can't. I even have a little thread going right now on getting bored with games. I mean when you think about just how much samey-ness there is between play throughs(roughly 90% the exact same I'd say!) the idea of wondering the Mojave or Skyrim all over again just to have the occasional different inconsequential dialogue option or to kill the same endless bandits in a slightly different way...I'm sorry, but no thanks.

I'd rather just YouTube the alternate ME romance scenes for pairing I enjoy than play through the exact same game 5+ times to just see a handful of difference scenes.

I think I replayed more as a kid. Mostly because I didn't have that many games but more spare time, I always blitzed through Pokemon Red over and over. Didn't care about Pokedex completion, I just wanted to hit the gyms again and take on the Elite Four with a new team. I still have that game memorized. I appreciate when games offer a New Game Plus option, those are neat, even if I don't have time.

I've replayed both Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 a few times, and I replayed the entire Mass Effect series. And I've lost count of the number of times I've replayed Portal, Portal 2, and HL2 and both of its episodes. Just...such good games. And little details you pick up that you never saw before.

I don't usually carry on in Sandbox games after I'm finished with the story, mostly because I get the feeling of completion from reaching the ending. Saints Row 2 and IV are the exceptions, and in the latter's case it was more me trying to find what I couldn't be arsed finding before (mostly audio logs then I was done).

Generally though? Tonnes. To use probably the best example I have, I don't think it would be hyperbole to say that I've played Halo 3's campaign to completion over forty times. Then add on the literally hundreds of individual mission replays or chapters of mission replays (The Covenant is such a great mission). That of course doesn't factor in multiplayer, local multiplayer or forge because I don't really count multiplayer as "replayable content" even though there's probably no better example.

And Halo 3's a linear game, but then again I never really feel the need to replay more open games.

Sure, depends on the game. If I really like a game I might try it again on a harder difficulty setting (always start on normal) or try going 100% on it if I missed out the first time around.

Most of the time, yes. If a game strikes a chord with me I'll try to take advantage of all the content I can: challenge maps, completionism, side-missions.

If it doesn't particularly strike a chord, then I'll usually stop playing soon after finishing the story (most recently with Destiny).

Only some few games.
Usually those where certain decisions impact the way the story unfolds.
I think the first game I have played thru several times was Blade Runner from 1997. There at certain decisions the game would split into several completely different endings and scenarios. Marvelous game.
More modern games I played thru several times would be basically the BioWare collection: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 1 and 2.
The last game I played thru several times was Life is Strange EP 1 and EP2. It's short and the differences in the decisions are noticeable.
Then some game are simply addictive and rather quick to complete. Ace Combat 5: The Unsung war has such a great pacing and score on top of its addictive "need perfect score" and "I have to unlock this" gameplay that I lost count how many times I completed it. Project Sylpheed was great too at that.
Tenchu Z is kind off the same. It was so easy and fluently being a stealthy super assassin there that I didn't mind the questionable presentation. I was doing the missions over and over again just to be perfect. Ninty-Nine Nights would be another example of that, I played that thing over and over again until I had the true ending.
I also completed Resident Evil several times back in the day even so the endings where mostly similar.
I played thru Dishonored twice for the good and bad ending. Thanks to the gimmicks it made a nice change going from none lethal to a lethal approach.
Then there are games that deliver some sort of dynamic campaign. I usually return to Napoleon Total War for world domination (of course!) once in a while.

I can't point my finger down on what makes me want to play a game again however. Small tiny issue may already put me off.
For example DA:I is (aside from the companion AI) probably better at everything than DA:O or DA2 yet I can't bring myself starting over again in it.
Mass Effect 3 was a great game 95% of the time, but the end put me off touching it again.
Despite having the option between lethal and none lethal approach and interesting dialog mechanics that influence the outcomes in Deus Ex Human Revolution I can't really get into again.
The Witcher 2 has some interesting decision and even splits into two different paths in the middle of the game yet I can't even complete it once.
I freaking love Ace Combat 5 (best AC ever!) but Ace Combat 6 can kiss my ass thanks to its lame story presentation despite most mechanics still being intact.

...Played through Mass Effect 1 about 4 times (two for each gender so I could have a perfect run via new-game+ to import), Mass Effect 2 three or four times (didn't need the new game+, I just really liked the game), Skyrim 3 times with a completionist angle (All my characters end up doing all the significant questlines...minus the civil war. I only did that once) and I'm considering another run, Bastion at least half a dozen times, Knights of the Old Republic 4 times on PC and once on my phone (All light side sentinels), Deus Ex: Human Revolution twice so I could finish off the achievements, been through Guild Wars 2 five times (one for each race) barring the Living Story content (missed season 1, completed season 2 once), Jedi Knight Jedi Academy twice, Ocarina of Time four or five times, Majora's Mask half a dozen times, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 twice...Binding of Isaac... (Ok, let's be real here, that doesn't count)...yeah, I replay a little...
