I usually say the brand name, but have tried switching to the generic "soda" if I'm ordering in a restaurant. I'm trying to figure out a way to be guaranteed not to hear, "Is _____ ok?"
i.e. "May I please have a coke?"
"Is Pepsi ok?"
or
"May I please have a pepsi?"
"Is coke ok?"
...now that I've started saying "May I please have a soda?"
it's still, "Is coke (or pepsi) ok?"

Do people really care? It's just fizzy sugar either way. From now on, I'm just going to order water.

Fizzy juice. Or just juice, since I tend to refer to diluting juice as such or fresh juice as "x juice." "X" being the fruit from which it comes. Or typically by brand name. "I want Coke" or "I want Irn-Bru" for example.

Anyone who calls it "ginger" confuses the hell out me, that's a hair colour or a spice. Not a beverage. Silly Glaswegians xD

As a lifelong Midwesterner it's always been Pop to me. Sometimes though I'll catch myself calling it "sodee pop", like I've got a grizzled old prospector form of Tourette's Syndrome or something.

I call it by it's brand name. I think asking for a "soda" always leads to "what type?" so I skip a step.

Grew up calling it pop, but I've lived in a lot of different places on three continents now, so... soda, pop, or soda pop... interchangeably.

...and I hate the taste of cola, so Coke and Pepsi are out, in my case.

Other: fris. Or sap.

I'm Dutch, so yeah. Fris for stuff like coke, fanta, icetea. Sap for something that's actually fruit juice.
