So I just got a new gaming PC, and I've been having a lot of fun with it. However I've noticed that I tend to play a lot of classic games, and games with bad graphics such as Rise of Nations, Minecraft and League of Legends. I think I don't really care about PC graphics, which is strange because I seem to really care about graphics when I'm playing consoles. I wish I realized this about myself before I bought a 20 inch screen, but whatever. One of my friends is a hardcore PC gamer and he said he feels the exact same way.

What do you think?

EDIT: it looks like there was some kind of glitch with the poll.

PC is probably the only system I DO care abou8t graphics.

If the graphics do NOT effect gameplay, and the game's fun, then I'm okay with bad graphics.

However, if a game's graphics interferes with the experience (and not in a clever way), or when a game has good graphics, and playing on them even on low qualities makes the game start flipping out, we have a problem.

I don't care about Graphics in general, and neither do alot of the people I know, something that SQUARE need to get into their brains so the story department gets more money and makes it bearable! I prefer lower quality PC graphics because my computer doesn't lag. Rayman 2 - The Great Escape vs Portal. Portal is a better game but I can't run it smoothly unless I decrease the screen size and it gets really annoying when your trying to do things with precision or doing it under timed conditions like in the final battle. But with Rayman I don't have any lag whatsoever, no matter what i'm doing and whatever screen size I'm using. But Rayman has a weaker story imo.

I would have to say I care and notice. If it's an old game, then I tend not to care as much, but newer games should at least try to be pleasing to the eye.
Also, your extra poll option is just so good that there will be less serious answers. Was tempted to push it myself.

As long as everything can be made out clearly and runs smoothly I really don't care too much.

Nope, I don't care about graphics at all. That being said, I DO care about in-depth and complex gameplay, so I wish more games were still created for the PC platform and then ported to consoles. Instead, we PC gamers just get console shite ported to us now.

This is my stance as well. Graphics don't translate to fun. ASCII is glorious!

I just started playing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas again. I think it is far superior to GTA4 and Saints Row.

Yes. For example, I can play Dragon Age with the graphics set to max. It looks ugly, plastic and creepy.

And you even get the more consistent framerate when you use the much prettier low settings.

If games are art - and I believe they are - and a visual medium, then of course I am goign to care about their presentation.

Resorting to the most cliche'd art example, I'd much rather have a very-high detail print of the Mona Lisa than some grainy Xerox black-and-white copy.

Old games, I don't obsess over "bad" graphics, it's all a matter of what is best for the particular game's ART! Doom was designed from the ground up with sprites in mind, with low resolution in mind, the game design from the tiniest to the broadest detail caters for that. With Doom 64 when the engine got a significant detail upgrade the entire pacing of the game changed, away from rock-music backed shooty fun, to a more horror and suspense theme.

When you change a game's graphics, even to improve, everything else has to change with it to fit that.

I highly disapprove of the tinkering with the textures of Perfect Dark's XBLA re-release, it added more realistic detail but spoiled the original slightly stylised artwork. Plus it made the cutscenes ridiculous as while it's ok for a low-poly model to have still lips, it looks creepy with high detail faces. No, they should have just sharpened the textures and maxed out Resolution and AA, keeping the essential art unchanged.

HD re-releases like God of War Collection are much more like it. Resolution and framerate to let the games reach their potential.

What I am miffed about are games like Halo Reach and Uncharted 2 in such paltry resolution, they should be in 1080p native rather than 720p, I play them on my 1080p monitor from only 3 feet away it is just blurry letting down the detail of the worlds. Most modern console games would benefit from a Full-HD upgrade which currently is only possible with a quality PC port.

Other games (mainly multi-plat) clearly aimed very high in terms of the detail of the art world, but when it came time to deliver the code the hardware couldn't take it. Enslaved is one of those games, clearly so much effort taken with the world they created, but it is let down by Aliasing, Texture-blur and short render distance. I don't think in this case it would have to change, I see failed potential here and in so many other games, mainly based around Epic's Unreal 3 engine.

Gameplay > Graphics and Overstuffed dialogue ALWAYS.

So many new games just think they can make glossy graphics in a game with tons of dialogue and having game mechanics less complex then whack-a-mole. It disgusts me.

I prefer having to think when playing a game, the majority of the population might disagree and prefer eyecandy to their eyes weap. Oh and someone talking to them all through the game preferably, be it audio tapes or whatever. GaaaaaAAH!
