While playing COD4, some guy dissed me about my rank (45).
I dont think the rank is relevant to determine someone´s skill.
Do you agree or disagree? Thoughts.

You can swear here you know.

Low rank(below 50 no prestige)= Low experience/slow leveling (low skills)/trial account but I don't say "You suck!"

people with high rank usually play and focus on their rank, finding cheesy ways to win or just noob hunting. The only way I could see rank really working is if you couldnt see your own rank so you would just play the game.

I can't say that I completely ignore my rank, that would be a lie, but it's not the be all to end all for how I would evaluate another player. Sure, a staff captain in halo 3 is probably pretty mediocre at the game, but I've been surprised by low level players on a number of occasions. The thing that is often so redeeming in a low level player, is that they are mostly the real team players. Too often do the high level guy's run out on their own self serving, very specific, level up run's, and the rest of the team is left not only to secure objectives with one less player, but one less good player. I think that in alot of cases, when a player is in say the mid 40's or late 30's of COD4, that it could be just as much a testament to their team working skill's instead of perhap's a lack of skill.

Thunderhorse makes a good point, you'll level slower if you work as a team in most games.
In 2142 the person who kills gets the full point, and anyone who assists gets half a point, if you're in a team so much that a lot of your kills are assits, then you're bound to level slower than someone who's only getting full blown kills.

I'll look at someones rank as an indication of how good they are. Although if I see someone on the bottom one or two ranks then I'll help them out or invite them to my squad. Higher-up players know enough to do it on their own, no?

Rank is not necessarily indicative of skill. There may be people out there who are naturals, play other kinds of games in the same genre regularly, have only recently acquired online connectivity or who are using a different account to their main one.

Also, you must factor in luck and good/bad days.

So, don't be surprised if a low rank player hits the top of the score list once in a while.

It depends really, the more friendly the game/gamers are... the more I do find myself caring about ranks. ie, If I'm playing with some regulars and one of them says "Wahoo, level 58 now!" I will give my congrats, and actually mean it. Ranks really only hold any sort of value to me if it is friendly. When higher ranks help out the lower ranks, that's good.

What I don't like, is getting called a "noob" simply because the character I am playing is a low level, it doesn't make me any less experienced in the game, it simply means I haven't levelled that character well enough yet.

I personally see higher ranks as having more responsiblity, I hate high level folk who think that they should be praised quite simply because they've got more spare time than most. In the example of Diablo 2, I love helping people out quite simply because I can, lower level folk need high level folk to do runs and things for them, and I am happy to assist in those cases. I give away items that they're not likely to find until much later on, i'll clear the area of bad guys if someone dies and needs to retrieve their body, that's what being a high level/rank is to me.

Ranks are a big problem with games.

For me, they mean nothing. I've played against 'low-ranked' people who are amazing and generals who are crap. They just mean you've played the game for longer.

What annoys me is when people stat-pad and generally when they do, it causes problems. While I would like ranks to be banned and while were at it win/lose ratios, they won't be because developers think that no-one will play their games if you haven't got any rewards.

I generally don't, apart from in games like COD4 where you rank determines what perks & equipment you have access to.

If the ranking is just used to match players of equal experience, they're fine... that way everyone gets a challenging match without being either bored silly or frustrated into controller-snapping rage. If they're being used by "people" to determine the merit of his/her/its opponents, then they're a representation of what's wrong with games.

I voted "don't care" because so long as the back-end function of ranks is working fine I really don't care.

I really couldn't care less about ranks. In online games I've had people with the highest ranks who were absolute shit and people with the lowest ranks who were fucking amazing. Ranks are really just a matter of how long you've played in most games, not how good you are.

If you stick to team matches and keep at it, you're bound to win every few games. So eventually your rank will start going up. They don't mean anything.

My opinion was not represented by the poll. I care about ranks, but that doesn't have to mean that people who have a lower rank are bad at the game or are bad people or should be hated. Just the opposite, that people who have a high rank are generally better at the game.

I remember once on Halo 3 this guy was giving me crap about my rank as he was a 4 star general or something like that
( my rank is horrible cause i quit matches i don't like, and have a preordained hatred or ranked mode due to GoW)
he told me I should go play Sierra 117 on easy mode.

My Team beat his with me as MVP and 8 kills more than him.

SO to conclude, rank means squat.
