I feel obligated to point out that not all lesbians have that attitude by a long shot. It's a disheartening attitude, though it was caused by a very overly vocal/pushy/extreme few who have created the whole stereotype that the rest of us have to put up with. I blame them (the extreme feminists that is) for unbalancing, so to speak, feminism and creating this whole man-hating impression.

Why call it liberal feminism if you support the rights of both men and women? Why not add it as a definition of humanism? You support the rights of every human, therefore you are a humanist. That's what I identify myself as. I'm against gender roles and discrimination for both genders. I believe that until both genders unite and accept themselves for who they are, each a unique person, we will never be equal. I do not advocate the rights of women or men, I advocate the rights of every single human being regardless of gender. If you truly want equal rights for everyone then you must also show it. If you support the rights of women or men then you don't want equal rights for both genders, you want rights for a specific gender.

(largely to do with them all being closer to radical feminists, not that they would ever admit it)

As for feminism being taken over, yes, it is well known, and it has reduced the term to something of a mockery. Honestly, I just wanted to state my point of view on the 'lesbian = man-hater = feminist' thing. I wasn't calling you out as such, and not in a negative way if it seemed I was. Now that that impression of feminism has been created, it's hard to dislodge it so there are a lot of people out there who think that and haven't realised it started out as something very different.

I realise this site is mostly male but you don't have to be a woman in order to be a feminist.

Now, I want to clarify feminism is not an general term. Many people see it as a negative term to descibe angry women who hate men but in a vast majority of cases this is not so. The word has become so associated with "man hating" and bra burning that even most women will shy away from the label.

For example, I was in a college class yesterday of about fifty people. When asked who would describe themselves, publically, as a feminist only two people raised their hand, including myself. The other was a 50 year old man.

For the sake of this pole, I'm talking about "Liberal Feminism". Roughly meaning you support equal rights for men and women. There's a lot more to it but I don't want to bore most of you.

Being raised by my mother and sister, I believe in equality regardless of age, gender, and race. That said, feminism really doesn't seem to stand for that anymore, it stands for the advancement of women regardless of all else, which I do not agree with. I was raised by women my whole life, living in a matriarchal society may make me kill myself.

While we're here, why is it "Feminist" when women hate men, but "Sexist" when men hate women? It's like how racism is everything a white man says and everything else is "Just being honest". It's becoming difficult to be a white male.

I understand that it is always the worst of a particular group that is the most vocal, but my views of feminists has been damaged a fair bit over time. Don't get me wrong, I believe everyone is equal and should have equal rights, but most of the feminists I come across seem to want more rights for women and less rights for men.
For example, a woman in my town who is a very vocal feminist will blow her top at the most courteous men for doing harmless things, and she never seems to be happy about the way she is treated. One day a man might hold a door open for her, and it's "How dare you! You think I'm incapable of opening a door because I'm a woman!?". The next day someone might do the opposite and she claims they're rude and un-chivalrous. She's a mad witch.
Equality is always a good thing, though..

A woman once yelled at me for not holding a door open for her, claiming I was unchivalrous. I told her that I believed her to be as capable of any man in the field of door-opening, and that if she felt she was inferior, that was her problem. I did suggest to her that if she felt she couldn't open a door for herself, maybe she should refrain from voting.

OT: I wouldn't term myself a feminist. Maybe an egalitarianist? I dunno. I figure people should be equal, but actually equal. Which means that until women are part of the draft, they don't get the right to vote. You can interpret that as a comedic exaggeration or a realistic statement of my opinion as you desire.

There will never be total equality between the sexes because women have to invest alot of time in sexual reproduction and men just have to 'make whoopie!' once. Which leads to a whole lot of issues which will always skew one way or the other, especially when you involve stupid people of both sexes.

That's not to say equality isn't a nice ideal, its just that we're human and human's are assholes. Because we've all got one.
