Not everyone has the money for games, especially during these tough times. So the logical choice would be to download from sites like piratebay. This is viewed as illegal but still a lot of people do it. So do you? And if so or not, why?
Personally, I do occasionally because I don't have money.

Problem with the No Money argument is that games are not a necessity. Really, Shamus [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/experienced-points/5777-Excuses-on-the-High-Seas] sums up my opinion pretty well.

Well see my situation... I get all my stuff stolen, all the stuff I've paid for, all the money I've given to those companies... so yah, of course I download illegally and in Nintendo's case I do it because I've sunk A TON of dough in to them, just so they can neglect their hardcore crowd??? Also, most of the stuff I download is old and discontinued and won't sell any copies nowadays anyways so it really doesn't hurt them.

I wish there was a "used to" option because I stopped after my computer caught some viruses from some pirated stuff.

If you are referring to current gen games then yes, i do sometimes illegally download them. Although i mainly do this if i cannot find a demo of the game and if I am skeptical about it even after all the coverage. Since i am a PC gamer i do not have the luxury of renting games and downloading them is my alternative. I DO purchase those that which i enjoy, and immediately get rid of that illegal copy once i am through with it. these illegal acts have saved me from buying some games that i would otherwise regret getting.

Games not a necessity? are you from bizarro world?
In all seriousness I see your point I guess the real reason would be that I'd rather spend money on other things and get things for free when I can.

Yes. Most of my game downloads fall in the realm of abandonware (questionable legality, not as much morally), or games that I own but have misplaced the original CDs (Wizardry 8, Oni, etc.). I don't download current gen stuff, because that crosses my personal line.

I think the only exceptions are various Type-Moon games. I can rationalize with some; they're not widely available, and then only in used copies that are apparently worth their weight in gold. One, however, I still feel pretty guilty about (I feel like I broke someone's trust).

Yes. But more of a get games from others you know kind of situation. Never trusted the internet for full games out of fear of viruses etc..

Does getting a console chipped count?

Games, no.

The only things I download are those which are not available at all in my area, and generally I do buy things that are worth the time if and once they do become available.

RIAA has no authority in Poland.

I don't download only games I respect. I won't download Blizzard's games (except for Diablo 2, but I already own two copies + add-ons).

But I will download Valve games. They treat us (Europeans) as shit with money, why should I treat them other way?

No, I really don't need things that badly. Besides, I'm on a campus network. I know somebody that got caught using bittorrent, which was considered pretty safe on this network up until then. It's just too legally sketchy for me, thanks.

I don't, but there's a reason for it.

I'm what most would consider an elderly gamer (hint on age: first -real- system: TI-994A) and i'm basically retired, besides my PC all i have is a DS, PS2 and 360....except for the DS my other consoles collect dust.

I'm just not into it like i once was, if i was though, probably.
