I thought I would never, and still find it quite odd that some people do it as a matter of course. A friend of mine always does it, I seem to remember.

I made a female character for the first time recently, though. The game is GW2, and I already had a Charr, y'see-- I just wanted as much to be different as possible for my second Charr playthrough, so I changed profession, background, legion, and gender.

I plan on playing a separate Mass Effect playthrough at some point as a female character just because someone I know told me a while back that you get treated differently throughout the game. Not sure if it was a reliable source so want to check it out for myself when I have some spare time.

Yes and no.

I only do this on single player games with exceptions if the Voice acting is bad...Or if the Romances are to my favouring and restricted (I.e morrgain in DA). If it's like TES then I just use a RGN (even = male, odd = female) to determine it.

I'm female, but I usually tend to do most of my RPG playthroughs with a male character. Usually it's for aesthetic reasons, like not wanting to be forced into wearing the stupid-looking armor female characters tend to get, or a desire to play as a character that I find physically attractive. Of course, I do make a point of doing female playthroughs to break up the monotony, but my default is still usually male.

Usually switch off or it's on a whim. For example, I played Skyrim with a guy, then Kingdom of Amalur with a girl, then Dragon Age with a guy, then Kotor, girl. I don't know why I tend to do that.

Most online games I create/use a male, though, to be made fun of less.

Every time. I can't stand playing as a male character because said character always tends to strike me as...not being me, I suppose. He's too tough, too arrogant, too mean, too something. RPGs, even when they say you can play as the character, always seem to want to make the male character out to be this tough guy space marine dude who has no sense of humor. Or when he does, it sounds terribly forced because he's not normally joking around. Or he's so pure and straight arrow that he doesn't understand the underworld--or he understands it too much.

Female characters though seem to come with a certain level of sass to them. The way they act, the dialogue they speak--or the dialogue options given to them--and the customization options for their appearance. They're allowed to have hair that's longer than half an inch! Plus, not every girl in the game suddenly wants to jump in bed with them by the halfway point which always seems to be the case with guy characters. Granted, guy characters tend to want to jump in bed with a girl character by the halfway point, but they don't turn into lambs with sob stories. Just hurt little puppies I suppose, which is still terrible.

The closest guy character I have ever seen in a game that I wanted to play as, or who I wished I could build my character like, was Alistar in Dragon Age: Origins. I know a lot of people found him annoying, but he's the closest thing to 'me' I've ever seen in an RPG. Funny, sarcastic, a bit confused but trying his best, wants to see the good in everyone, still cracking funny lines during a crisis, and just generally being a good guy.

Yes. If I feel like it might make the story more interesting or just to see if the grass really is greener on the other side. I have devoted the entire fallout series to play as a female character. Started out as a novelty in fallout 2 and then became tradition. I have also given all of them the sirname "Risio"(because reasons)

Title says it all. In many RPG games, you are given the option of choosing the gender of your player character. As such, it's entirely possible that a player could choose to play not as their own sex, but rather their opposite.

Do any of you do this? An if so (or not so) please give a reason why.
All the time.

The reason? Variety. It's really that simple.

I tend to play females quite a lot in my RPGs, though it varies.

When it's an RPG with character creation, I'll often write up a whole backstory for my protagonist, come up with a personality, the whole nine yards. I have a fondness for female characters, so they tend to come out female.

In games with pre-set but gender-interchangeable protagonists, I'll go with whichever character I prefer the design (or in some cases, voice) of. Particularly in pokemon games, I almost exclusively wind up as female. (EXCEPT in 3rd gen, because Brendan is THE MAN and May could only dream of being as awesome as he is.) Again, this usually winds up as being female. It's rarely a sexual preference, too. I honestly just like female aesthetics, artistically, independent of any attraction.

Well either way, Jennifer Hale is a thousand times better of a VA than that other guy who plays maleshep. She's almost half the reason my Shepard is female. You can't go wrong.

I'm male
and if I play a RPG like WoW or Lotro and I will play that for many, many hours, well then I don't want to be staring all that time at another guys ass, now will I?

If i have the choice i usually play a woman. It doesn't help that most RPGs only offer muscled hunks as male options which i can't really identify with.
That's my whole thing right there. When done right women in video games are so much more relatable than their male counterparts

Im female. So if its third person, i opt for being a girl. If I play as a man and I can see myself it creates a dissonance between me and the character. It just feels weird and I dont know what to do with myself. I suppose it rings a sort of "This is another person" bell in my head. Its sometimes a good thing, sometimes a bad thing. If the game is a first person, I often enjoy playing a man. Especially in Fallout NV.

I model characters after myself so I always play male. I don't mind playing female characters but it's what I default to.

not very often. The kneejerk reaction to a male playing a female character used to be "what a creep that is, is he getting off on his character?" back when I was a kid. It's a stupid line of thought but it's one that would make me feel ashamed of playing a female character back then. Remember that I was starting to get into games between 2004 and 2006, years that were practically defined by World of Warcraft and its large populations of half-naked female elves who were secretly men, which, in spite of the fact that I have never played WoW, would help form how I subconsciously felt about certain game-associated phenomena. Yes, the bit about never even giving the option to try WoW a passing thought falls under there somewhere.

I know it's kinda irrational to feel ashamed for simply playing a female character but it's a nagging feeling that stuck with me. I do not mind it at all in games where I don't create my own character. It's just a thing about purposefully creating a female character in a game that to me seems somewhat weird, almost bordering of fetishistic. I am fully aware that it's not, that's just the subconscious reaction I've developed in my formative gaming years.

Also, weirdly enough, my character in every Tony Hawk's game I've played is a girl going by the name of Millie. I seriously have no idea why I feel differently about her than I do about other characters I've created. Maybe it's a tradition thing.

Tenkage: Female Elf Drone Master

My basic character in my Shadowrun Let's Play, being clever and mostly a good girl, plays smart and stays out of the line of fire. And if the drones don't work, a nice un armed punch will do the trick

Yes. When I play an RPG I don't want to ever associate main character with myself, I want to create a fictional person that I'd like as a star of this show. Naturally it's easier to like someone of opposite gender. However that also depends on the show aka game in question. For example, I felt like in Dark Souls and Demon's Souls I want to see a male hero, while in Dragon's Dogma and Dragon Age female heroes felt more appropriate to me.
In all honestly, my gender has little to do with my choice of character. I don't play MMOs. If I ever would, I think I'd create a character based on what looks most impressive/unique after checking all character creation options for both genders.
