(sorry if this has been done)

All references to the wonderful Monty Python sketch aside, do you ever expect a religion (any religion) to gain a great enough following as to give it enough power to start a modern inquisition?

I'd like to think religious fanaticism would never reach that level, but I wouldn't necessarily be surprised... Especially if it was Catholicism.

There are certain parts of the US where religion has de facto inquisition-esque powers, due to extreme social pressures and whatnot. America has freedom of religion, but unfortunately most people don't realize they have any other option. i.e. they were raised in the religion, all their family and friends are in the religion, etc.

See also: Islam.

So yeah, I do think that, given the right level of hysteria and mass panic, our country could slide into militant theocracy.

Not really. The modern interpretation is found in politics (See the Mcarthy scenario in the US).

I've learned over the years to expect it, though, as we all know, no one can actually expect the Spanish Inquisition. It's the very nature of the thing.

Or so it wants you to think, so you'll never remember to expect it...

Wait? What was that noise?!

Oh no! It's - !

Radical Evangelical Christians scare the shit right out of me, they are so far from the teachings of Christ it makes me want to smack them. I don't really believe in Christianity anyway, but still... You can't be anything but Christian and hope to win any kind of election in the US. I bet you ten dollars(or the equivalent in your local currency) large chunks of the southern US secede and become theocracies.

No, but I do expect the Christian Taliban to show up at my door with a crucifix sometime soon. They may have to fight the scientologists to determine who gets to string me up to a light post though.

Radical Islam might sound scary, but at least it's on a different continent.

Radical Christianity of sorts is both scary, at nearly the same level of power and craziness and it's right near us for at least some of the posters on the escapist. You know, USA 'n all.
Yeah, but we have eyes in ears in almost all forms of organized Radical Christianity but very few even now inside the radical organizations of other religions.

Just between you and me--most Christians are expecting another Inquisition in the end days.

I enjoyed Mel Brooks's Song and Dance variation much better...
