Cheats have been a part of gaming since the beginning. But when you use them, do you feel like you have actually cheated yourself?

Discuss.

No. If the cheats were put into the game, then they are there for us to use. Generally, I try to beat a game without cheating before I goof off and have fun with stuff like "Unlimited Health, Ammo, etc."

Actually, come to think of it, there have been a real lack of true "cheat codes" in games nowadays. It's a shame, because stuff like Paintball Mode or Invincibility really made the game interesting, at least from my standpoint.

If I use them to beat the main game, then I'd feel guilty unless the computer is also cheating in such a way that it is nigh on imposible to beat. otherwise, I'd just use cheats to screw about, trying to get some enjoyment out of the game after the main storyline.

No. Not against the computer. Since the computer is a cheating bastard. [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheComputerIsACheatingBastard]

...

Sorry, I had to.

But seriously, I would never cheat in a multiplayer game, that's just silly. Against the computer for the purposes of obtaining shits and giggles, or beating a particularly difficult section that I don't have the patience and skill to beat the usual way, then it is perfectly acceptable.

I won't feel guilty for that.

I do. I have only ever cheated once and it was on my old xbox account, I boosted to 10th prestige on COD4. That was the reason I made my current account.

And here I was thinking this would be about relationships.

On topic: If it's stuff like unlimited ammo or zero gravity in single player, then I don't care. I don't cheat in online games, mainly because I don't know how, but also because I don't see the point.

When I use cheats it is normally just to get tanks and weapons in GTA and such. You know; just for fun. If I used a cheat to actually progress in a game though, I guess I would feel sort of guilty.

I always feel like I've just lost the game if I cheat on a first play through.
That said, if a game gets too frustrating, I'll fuck it off anyway...

Since I only cheat in singleplayer games after I've finished it the first time, I don't have much to feel guilty about.
Although I did have to cheat to get through Half Life 2 the first time, and I do get the feeling that it's going to haunt me forever. In my defence, I was getting really whizzed off with it.

You really should specify whether you mean single or multiplayer, or add a "only in multiplayer" option to the poll, and maybe a "if the cheats were put in by the developers" option.

Multiplayer cheating is a whole different thing than single player.

Yes.

I haven't used cheats or a walkthrough since I was about 8 years old, nor have I felt like I've needed to at any point.

I rarely cheat, due to not many modern games (current gen) not having cheat codes, or any that I know of. But back when I first got StarCraft, I used the cheats to get pass the levels I thought were to hard, and felt like I didnt even try. Thankfully, I can beat most of the levels with relative easenow and days, so if those console commands are in SC2, I will not be using them this time around.

Damn you, I'll be there all night now! :(

OT: I feel guilty if I haven't finished the game or level yet. But on a re-run, nope. Its free game then.
