Occasionally and rarely I buy a lottery ticket and nothing else, usually one from the health lottery rather than the national lottery. I have only ever gambled on horses/dogs once and won coincidentally, I was rather glad of the £4 because I had no fags. Otherwise I never get scratch cards or gamble in card games. Gambling is the one few vices I have never had, drink, chemicals, promiscuity and all the rest but never gambling. Never saw the point of it, I do not understand it either. Not that I judge people over it simply that I do not see the appeal, I see the people at the local supermarket that buy a large wedge of scratch cards and don't leave and stand there scraping away. Then if they win they cash it in to buy more, or just buy more anyway.
I had an old school friend when I was younger and we worked at the same themepark, staff could choose to pick up either a cheque or cash from the office on payday. After he finished his shift on payday he would pick up cash, get changed out of his staff uniform then walk back into the park then go to the arcade and spend most (sometimes all) of his wages in the one armed bandits. If you went for a night out he would spend most of the night at the slot machines in the pub if they had one. I have never worked anywhere that didn't have a little horse/dogs clique either, the guys that spend their breaks together going through the papers and then sending someone off to the bookies. Gambling is no less pointless than any of the things I used to do though its just something I have never shared, its still destructive though and can cause family breakups and stuff.

I've thrown a little money into communal lottery buy-ins with co-workers before, and I've played various forms of poker with friends and a $5 buy-in (which tends to go toward beer at the end anyway)... but that's the extent of it. Always just for fun.
Oh yeah, in video games... my primary New Vegas character has 10 luck, and he's quite literally a millionaire, in bottlecaps. Can you imagine storing that many bottlecaps?

Never tried it, I'm far too careful with money to gamble, never spend spend any money on things on things that there is a chance I may not enjoy besides games, I'll try any game

Never spent a dime on anything to do with gambling (casinos/lottery/scratchcards/whatever), I know how statistics work and the odds that I'm going to lose far more than I'm going to win
But I can definitely see the temptation. Who wouldn't want a chance to solve all their financial problems for themselves, their kids and even future generations? j

I gamble on blackjack, crabs and casino wars. What people seem to misunderstand about gambling is that it is not an investment to make money but rather paying to have fun. Some nights I win and some nights I lose so I'm pretty balanced on losses versus wins. I don't gamble as much as I used to because i need the money at the moment but I'm still partial to a bit. Everythings fine in moderation.

Never will, because it's pathetic and a bad habit to waste money over and over again to play games that you're most likely bound to lose anyways. I do enjoy playing poker though, but then of course NOT with real money.

I'm not interested enough in sports or card games for it to be worth my money. And I've never seen the appeal of mindless gambling (lottery tickets, slot machines, etc.)
My brother gambles small amounts (less than £1 at a time) on cricket, but he's really into the stats side of the game. So he thoroughly enjoys looking at the odds, discussing a bowler's performance that season, chewing over whether he thinks the bookies have made the right call, etc. He can spend almost an hour deciding how to bet 50p. So - for him - it's very good value for money!
I personally think you should only gamble if you think it would still be "worth it" even if you lost all the money. So putting in a £30 bet for a game of poker is fine if that evening spent playing poker is worth £30 to you. Similarly, my parents have always placed small bets when they go to the races, as that's part of the day.

He may be coming back for a while. I do the lottery, a single "line" of numbers on each draw. Although I don't really expect to win. I'd never put a lot of money into it. Apparently they are going to double how much it costs to enter in the Autumn so I imagine I will stop playing then.

However, it's kinda traditional to put 50p/£1 on the Grand National, usually a random horse with a funny name. This is not so much gambling but having fun with friends and enjoying the moaning/groaning/cheering-on of our chosen equine champion.

I don't mess with the lottery, but I do like to play the ponies every now and then. Maybe once or twice a year I'll go with like $100. Sometimes leave with less, sometimes with more. I worked at a gambling place when I was a teenager, so I picked up some folk wisdom from the old hands there. I'm not great at picking horses, but not bad.
The appeal for me is that picking horses feels like Serious Work. Basically sit there analyzing stats, past performances, etc, super logical business. Then the race. I'm one of those people who yells for the horse they need, so it can be pretty emotional. Then, win or lose, it's back to logic mode. It's a fun roller coaster sort of way to spend a day.
