Everybody has occasionally disliked a game that (seemingly) everybody else loves and praises, it isn't rare.It just shows how diverse we are in taste and that's a good thing in the end.

Generally those same well-liked games tend to have sequels, and those same sequels tend to bring a lot of hype with them. This hype can be annoying but it can also shed some light about what will be improved in the sequel and if it will be worth playing despite the dislike toward the previous game.

My newest case in point : Oblivion/Skyrim. I didn't like Oblivion a lot but I definitely will be buying Skyrim. I am not very optimistic, but I figured that the previous game does not always imply the quality of the sequel.

If I liked the first game I usually pick up the sequel.

If I don't like the first game I pass on the sequel.

Seems pretty simple.

If the series is good, then I'll usually get the sequel.

If I don't think the series was good, but a new installment looks promising (Two Worlds II, Skyrim) then I'll pay more attention to it, and maybe even get it if the general reception looks promising.

I give every game a chance to surprise me.

Sequel or not.

I treat each game on it's own merits.

Same here, in fact I was blown away by the new Dragon Age 2 demo. I didn't particularly like the first one because it got repetitive. The second one seems a little more intuitive and fun. However, it could be because I was playing as a warrior in the first game and a rogue in the demo :p

I usually rent the sequel if I hear a lot of buzz around it, even if I didn't like the first game. This rarely works to my advantage. Dead Space 2, Assassin's Creed 2/2.5, and Black Ops. I disliked the first one and got screwed when I rented the sequels.

If the first game was good then yes I'll buy the sequel. Gears of War and Assassin's Creed being good examples.

Yeah, I usually give the sequel a chance if the trailers or press releases make it look or sound as though it's significantly improved or at least reasonably different from its predecessor.

^what he said^

Unless it looks like a worse game from the trailers or whatever. Then I just don't get it.

The chance that I'll play a sequel to a game I didn't like is fairly low, unless it's a relatively new IP. I'll allow them two or three games, to see if they find their feet.

That's pretty much standard for me too. Getting into a series in the middle generally isn't a good idea.

Depends on why I didn't like the game, how much I didn't like it, and what's changed.

If I hated the game, hated it on mechanical grounds, and they've changed little, I will probably pass.

If I was indifferent, found the story to be lackluster, and it looks like they refined things, I'll probably rent.

If I hated it, but they addressed most of the issues I hated, I'll certainly rent and maybe even buy.

If I didn't like the first game, I don't try the sequel unless someone says it's different.

Generally the games that I end up hating are the same ones I really wanted to like for one reason or another, as only that level of dissapointment can change me from "this game isnt interesting enough to play" to "fuck dat shizit and all of its mutant offspring".

So because of that theres always a little part of me that gets really excited when the sequel to a game that didn't work out for me is announced.

The two that are a perfect example of this right now are final fantasy 13-2 and Skyrim, as I hated both of the previous titles, but wanted to like them so damn bad.

I know my biases really well. If I think the original title looked like something I wouldn't enjoy I don't bother with the sequel unless they really stepped up the game. UC2 is a good example I played the first one's demo and thought it was slightly above average but nothing special but played the UC2's demo and was amazed at how much more action there was so I bought it.

Just because the majority likes something doesn't mean I am going to.

It really depends on the game, and what I didn't like about the original, and how much I can get it for if I'm not sure I want it. Take for example Assassin's Creed. I had the original on preorder, played it, and hated it. It was a lot of fun for a few hours, until all the missions became incredibly repetitive and I couldn't be arsed to care about the story enough to go through them. When Assassin's Creed 2 came out I didn't give it much thought, but then when I saw it for $15 new a couple of months after it was released I decided to buy it, and to date it is one of my favorite games.
