World English Dictionary
haggle (ˈhæɡəl)

?vb (often foll by over)
1. to bargain or wrangle (over a price, terms of an agreement, etc); barter
Aah the ancient art of not paying more than what you think it's worth.

I, myself, do it as much as possible and I usually manage to get at least a 5% discount, though I have gotten better deals. I will do it anywhere but supermarkets as well, so one is safe. Clothes, hardware, my bike, at the bank, at a restaurant. Pretty much anything, anywhere the clerk or manager has the ability to lower the price.

The best deal I have ever managed was a 50% discount on a 1GB stick of RAM which I thought was ridiculously overpriced. I told the clerk I could get the same piece of hardware from a better brand on line for less than half (though 25% would have been more accurate) so he took 50% of to make the sale.

Do you do it escapists? Or do you hate guys like me.

Edit: OMG wrong board, please move to Off-topic. Sorry

I can't haggle in supermarkets or brand shops but... Markets and low key brands I ALWAYS try and haggle, I'm a student after all!

My grandfather used to haggle at supermarkets.
He also used to walk around in tights and a tunic.

Maybe at a market. But at Super Markets and such, never. And maybe if something is very overpriced. I remembered at one of the local electrical goods store where I spotted a game ive missed out on and wanted to play (Commandos 2). Note that it was like 3 years after the release of the game and I thought it'd be cheap. But nooooooooo, those idiots sold it at full release price. So I grabbed it and haggled with the personnel.

I don't care enough to do it. Money isn't important. That is, not counting the ~10 000 dollars (at least I think it should be around that amount. It's hard when you use a currency only known to about 10 million people... =.=") I will use to travel to the place where that person is when I'm finished with school here. Also, I won't get that money until I'm 18.

Ok, I got a bit carried away... In the end, it's a no from me. I don't go out of my way to get a better price. The time it takes to haggle is worth more to me than the money I would save. Also, I never go to any place where I would actually be able to get a discount in that way. EVER.

Yes. I work in retail, and with an electronic till system, your haggling would leave my till short. So yes, I think I have a legitimate reason not to like hagglers.
No employee discounts either? Then I'd just take my money elsewhere, or ya'know pay the full price. I wouldn't make a big scene about it, so I hope I'm not as bad as some of the people you might have met.

I don't haggle, because it doesn't work. The shops I shop at (for the most part) have electronic tills and keep a track of their money. That means whenever the money is counted in the register after the day must match the items that were sold. For example, if the till has recorded a copy of Modern Warfare to be sold, and the retail price is $50 but only $30 is recorded, then the person at the register looks a twat.

That's why I don't haggle because it's not going to happen. I also find it a bit rude and skin flinty.

Usually I waste my money on expensive things, or I look for sales, so I don't have to pay as much in the first place. I don't see the point of trying to haggle in a retail store. Because you won't get anything any cheaper from it where I live.

I also work in retail, a pawn shop actually, so we get a lot of people coming in expecting to make special deals and get extra bonuses. Most we ever do is taxes in cash deals, same as the employee discount. Its funny watching a lot of people always want better deals though and trying to negotiate better deals but we really can't.

As far as I know in Wales, you can't haggle unless it's a small business. If in retail a clerk wouldn't have the authority to sell an item at a lower price. It'd involve going to ask a superior who would almost certainly say "No."

Haha, yes, I have, and recently. I called up the cable company and told them (politely) that I was leaving and going to a competitor. They asked why and I stated the competitor was cheaper, so they quickly gave me a special rate to hold onto me. Haggling is fun. :)

I only do it when i'm travelling in southern Europe 'cuz everything there is priced about 10x times what the crap is worth, and they won't even argue if you haggle it down with 30-40%. I never do it when i'm home, here in Norway, because the prices are roughly the same even if i were to buy it online so i won't bother making a fuzz.

Yeah in southern Europe they pretty much expect you to haggle. I live in Denmark and from my experience the clerks are allowed to give discounts almost everywhere. I have not and will not do it in a supermarket, because I doubt the girl at the till has the same permission. But that's the only place I consider off limits. I don't see why Norway should be any different than Denmark? We are almost related after all.

Only if I'm buying a lot of things or buying one expensive thing. For example, I'd haggle if I'm buying a console or three games but I wouldn't do it if I'm buying just one.
